Special stitches
TR-Popcorn: Make 5 tr in same st, remove hook from loop and insert from front to back of 1st tr and then into dropped loop and pullthrough. Ch 1 to close. This closing chain is not counted in any chains you are asked to make after the popcorn. Note: corner ch spaces are not included in any st count. 1. Starting with a magic ring, ch 4 [counts as dc plus ch-1], (dc ch 1), 11 times. Join to 3rd ch, fasten off, and secure ends. Stitch count: 12 dc, 12 ch-1. 2. Join with a standing tr in any ch-1 space [P1], 4 tr in same space and make trpopcorn stitch[P2,3], [not forgetting to close each popcorn with a ch-1], ch 1, (skip next st, tr-popcorn in next ch-1 space, ch 1) 11 times. Join to 1st tr-popcorn, fasten off, and secure ends. Stitch count: 12 tr-popcorn, 12 ch-1 spaces.
3. Join with standing sc in any tr-popcorn, (ch 3, sc in next tr-popcorn) [P1], 11 times, ch 3. Join to standing sc with a sl-st. Stitch count: 12 sc, 12 ch-3 spaces.
4. Sc in next ch-3 space, \*ch 5[P1], (skip next st, 5 sc in next ch-3 space) twice [P3], skip next st, sc in next ch-3 space.\* Repeat from \* to \* 4 times, omit last sc. Join to 1st sc with a sl-st. Stitch count: per side: 11 sc, 1 ch-5 corner space.
5. \*Ch 1 in ch-5 corner space, (5 dc, ch 3, 5 dc [P1,2], ch 1, sc in 3rd [middle] sc of 5sc group, ch 3, sc in 3rd sc of next sc group [P3]. \* Repeat from \* to \* 4 times. Join to 1st ch-1, fasten off, and secure ends. Stitch count: per side: 10 dc, 1 ch-3 space, 2 ch1 space, 2 sc. 6. Join with standing bphdc in 7th dc of any corner group [P1], bphdc in next 3 sts \*skip next ch-1 and sc, 7 dc in next ch-3 space [P2], skip next ch-1 and sc, bphdc in next 5 sts, in centre chain of ch-3 corner space (blhdc, ch 2, blhdc) [P3], bphdc in next 5 sts\* Repeat from \* to \* 4 times omit last 4 bphdc. Join to standing bphdc, fasten off, and secure ends. Stitch count: per side: 10 bphdc, 2 blhdc, 7 dc.
Hint: In this round the stitches are worked in two groups, the 12 stitches of the corner group and the 7 stitches of the fan group. 7. Join with a standing bldc in 2nd stitch after any corner [P1], bldc in next 4 sts [P2], [/ast stitch falls in last bphdc of corner group]. \*in fan group (bphdc in next 2 sts, bpsc in next 3 sts, bphdc next 2 sts) [P3], in corner group (bldc in next 6 sts, in ch-2 corner space (dc, ch 2, dc), bldc in next 6 sts) [P4]. \* Repeat from \* to \* 4 times, omit last 5 bldc. Join to standing bldc with sl-st. Stitch count: per side: 3 bpsc, 4bphdc, 14dc. 8. Ch 1 and hdc in same st, hdc in next 18 sts, \* in ch-2 corner space (hdc, ch 2, hdc), hdc in next 21 sts. \* Repeat from \* to \* 4 times, omit last 19 hdc. Join to 1st hdc with a sl-st. Stitch count: per side: 23 hdc.
For a 6-inch square stop at this point, fasten off and work in ends. It will work perfectly as a stand-alone square or as smaller versions to use as a border around the larger squares. 9. Ch 1 and hdc in same st, hdc in next 5 sts, sc in next st, \*ch 3, skip next 3 sts, sc in next st, hdc in next 9 sts, in ch-2 corner space (hdc, ch 2, hdc), hdc in next 9 sts, sc in next stitch. \* Repeat from \* to \* 4 times omit last 6 hdc, sc. Join to 1st hdc, fasten off, and secure ends. Stitch count: per side: 2 sc, 20 hdc, 1 ch-3 space.
10. Join with a standing dc in any ch-2 corner space, (ch 5, dc) in same space [P1,2], \*dc in next 8 sts, sc in next st, ch1, skip next 2 sts, in ch-3 space (5 dc, ch 3, 5 dc) [P3], ch1, skip next 2 sts, sc in next st, dc in next 8 sts, in ch-2 corner space (dc, ch 5, dc). \* Repeat from \* to \* 4 times. Join to standing dc, fasten off, and secure ends. Stitch count: per side: 2 sc, 28 dc, 2 ch-1 spaces, 1 ch-3 space. 11. Join with a standing sc in the 3rd stitch before any ch-5 corner space [P1], \*ch 1, in ch-5 corner space (5 dc, ch 3, 5 dc) [P2], ch1, (skip next 2 sts, sc in next st, ch 2) twice, skip next 2 sts, sc in next 2 sts, in point group bphdc in next 10 sts skipping ch-3 space [P3], sc in next 2 sts, (ch 2, skip 2 stitches, sc in next st) twice. \* Repeat from \* to \* 4 times. Join to standing sc with sl-st. Stitch count: per side: 8 sc, 10 bphdc, 10 dc, 4 ch-2 spaces.
12. \*skip ch-1 space, sc in next 5 sts, in ch-3 corner space (sc, ch 2, sc), sc in next 5 sts [P1], skip next ch-1 space, (sl-st in next st, 3 hdc in next ch-2 space) twice, sl-st in next st, skip next st. In point group (sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 4 sts), skip next st, (sl-st in next st, 3 hdc in ch-2 space) twice, sl-st in next stitch. \* Repeat from \* to \* 4 times. Join to closing sl-st R11, fasten off, and secure ends. Stitch count: per side: 23sc, 12 hdc.
Hint: In this round you will be working in sets of stitches again, there are 2 sets of 6 either side of each corner, 4 sets of 3, in groups of 2 on either side of the point group, and the point group of 11 stitches. It sounds wordy and complicated but really it's very simple,just keep counting and remember that the slip stitches from the last round do not countasstitches. 13. Join with standing blsc in either chain of any ch-2 corner space, (ch 2, blsc) in same st, [P1,2], \*bpsc in next 2 sts, bphdc in next 2 sts, bpdc in next 2 sts, [P3] (bpdc in next st, bphdc in next st, bpdc in next st) twice, [P4] in point group, bpdc in next 2 sts, bphdc in next 2 sts, bpsc in next 3 sts, bphdc in next 2 sts, bpdc in next 2 sts), [P5] (bpdc in next st, bphdc in next st, bpdc in next st) twice, bpdc in next 2 sts, bphdc in next 2 sts, bpsc in next 2 sts, in either corner ch (blsc, ch 2 blsc). \* Repeat from \* to \* 4 times, omit last corner group. Join to standing blsc with a sl-st. Stitch count: per side: 2 blsc, 7 bpsc, 12 bphdc, 16 bpdc. 14. Ch 1 and hdc in same st, [P1] \* in 2 ch corner space (hdc, ch 2, hdc), skip next st, hdc in next 36 sts. \* Repeat from \* to \* 4 times, omit last hdc. Join to 1st hdc with a sl-st. Stitch count: per side: 38 hdc.
15. Ch 3 [counts as dc] [P1], dc in next stitch, \*in ch-2 corner space (dc, ch 2, dc) dc in next 38 sts. \* Repeat from \* to \* 4 times, omit last 2 dc, Join to top of ch-3, fasten off, and secure ends. Stitch count: per side: 40 dc.
