RUNNER BEANIE (PHASEOLUS PILEUS)
BY MATT BABCOCK (MATTB ON RAVELRY) I designed this hat for running. It is thin, light, and washable, and doesn't have holes in it. It weighs an ounce and can be carried in a small pocket. Since I don't care for hats that cover my ears, it is short. Many thanks to my wife Sharon (sharonf on Ravelry), who knit it for me. She suggested using Judy's Magic caston to start, which doesn't leave a hole or bump. Sharon also translated my handwritten pattern into the neatly organized document below, and added clarifications to this second edition of the pattern. SIZE Adult

Using Judy's Magic caston (directions available at http:/knitty.com/ISSUEspring06/FEATmagiccaston.html), cast on 6 stitches in MC over smaller needles (3 stitches on each needle), leaving a tail several inches long. (12 sts) Round 2: Treat each loop from Round 1 as a separate stitch. \*Knit into the front and back of one st (kfb), k1, repeat from \* to end. (18 sts) If the first two rounds are too tight to work easily, try casting on and working Round 1 on the larger needles, then switching back to smaller needle for Round 2 and beyond. Round 3: \*Kfb, k2, repeat from \* to end. (24 sts) Round 4: \*Kfb, k3, repeat from \* to end. (30 sts) Round 5: \*Kfb, k4, repeat from \* to end. (36 sts) Round 6: Knit around. :ck gauge at this point to see if you should do the last round of increases or nc Round 40: Repeat round 13, if needed. Otherwise, knit around. (144 sts) Knit around for another 1 inch or until desired length above brim. At this point, it's a good idea to thread stitches onto a piece of waste yarn and launder hat as you plan to care for it. If you are using superwash wool, the hat may get a little longer with washing.
