US 2 - 3.0 mm - circular needle (or 5 double pointed needles), US 4 - 3.5 mm - circular needle (or 5 double pointed needles), or any other size that gives you correct gauge.

Work in 2x2 ribbing as established until it measures 2 (2.5, 2.5, 3.5 3.5) cm / 0.75 (1, 1, 1.25, 1.25)".
HAtBODY
Change to bigger size needle, US 4 - 3.5 mm and start working in St st. Work as established until your work measures about 12.5 (13.75, 15, 16.25, 17.5) cm / 5 (5.5, 6, 6.5, 7)" from cast-on edge.

Cut yarn, weave through remaining stitches and secure. Weave in loose ends with tapestry needle. Carefully block the hat over a balloon, making sure not to stretch the brim too much. Add a pompom on the top after blocking if you wish to. Use yarn and needle to thread all pompom strings into the top of the hat; secure on inside of hat.
