Toddler's Cast Cover II Pattern: Cotton Yarn Option by Hattie B. Holtapp - Knitting Guide for Adjustable Cast Sleeve

Toddler's Cast Cover II the cotton option by Hattie B. Holtapp

What with the unpredictability of fall weather, and wool being what it is, I thought my daughter would appreciate cotton next to her skin.

1-2 balls Elann Esprit should offer sufficient yardage. Note: mine is cobbled together from remnants of three colors: (MC) Pecan (7625), (CC1) Burgundy Rose (3919), and (CC2) Orchid Pink (6056). Esprit is an elasticized cotton yarn--like Cascade Fixation. I choose to work the yarn tightly over larger needles, but it lends itself to all sorts of tensions and yardage varies accordingly. One ball ranges from 100 yds unstretched to $\mathord{\sim}190$ yards stretched. Size 8 double pointed needles. Gauge: 26 sts $\times\ 26$ rows in k1, p1 ribbing.

Sleeves are knit in the round, while the back is knit flat in garter stitch to offer more elasticity. The finished measurements of this model are 7 inch sleeves with a 9 inch back. You'll need to adjust your measurements accordingly to fit the wearer. Another option, is to knit the initial 5 rows of ribbing flat, then join to knit in the round in order to make a "thumb loop" to keep the cover in place over the hand. Crude, yet effective. With CC1, cast on 34 sts, divide onto dpns, join and work 5 rounds k1,p1 in the round. Next round: Knit, decreasing 4 sts evenly across row. Work 3 more rounds in stockinette. Resume K1, P1 ribbing for 11 rounds. Switch to CC2, knit one round (to prevent oddly colored purl bumps), and resume ribbing for 10 more rounds. Switch to CC1, knitting the entire round once more, then resume ribbing for 13 rounds. Switch to MC, knitting the entire round, then ribbing for 26 rounds more. Begin working flat in garter stitch to form the back. Knit every row until garter stitch section measures 9 inches. Rejoin work to continue in the round, making sure the "seam" of the second sleeve will be on the same side as the first. Work your color bands in reverse. After the last round of ribbing in CC1, K one round, increasing 4 sts evenly across the round, then work 3 additional rounds in stockinette. Work 5 rounds in ribbing, bind off loosely in rib.
