0-3 months

3.5mm hook, 5.5mm hook, DK yarn in main colour (eg pink)and oddment of darker colour (nipple), tapestry needle for sewing in ends sc - single crochet (UK double), hdc - half double crochet (UK half treble), inc - increase ie work 2 stitches in stitch from previous round, repeat instructions in brackets () to end of round For a newborn beanie only increase 4sts on round 9 ie (inc, 8sc) to bring stitch count to 40, work only 7 rounds straight then work round 12 to make shells. To make beanie larger, do another round of increases, making sure to keep stitch count divisible by 4 to make shell row, and work an extra round or two of straight hdc to increase length to fit
Starting at nipple
1. Using contrast and 3.5mm hook Chain 2, work 6sc in 2nd chain from hook, slip to join 2. Work 1sc in back loops only of each stitch - 6sc 3. Sc in each stitch though both loops as normal - 6sc 4. (inc) around - 12sc 5. (inc,sc) around- 18sc 6. (inc,2sc) around - 24sc Break dark and slip stitch using lighter colour to change and change to 5.5mm hook 7. Working though back loops only of stitches work (inc,3sc) - 30sc 8. Though both loops as normal start hdc work (inc, 4hdc) - 36hdc 9. (inc,5hdc) - 42hdc 10.(inc, 6hdc) - 48hdc 11.Work hdc in each hdc from previous row around for 10 rounds 12. (Slip into next stitch, skip next stitch, work 4dcs into next stitch, skip next stitch) around, slip to join, break yarn and neaten all ends. Define nipple with a couple of stitches to gather between steps 3 and 4 if needed
