put the next 38 sts on hold, they will be worked for instep later. the heel is worked over the 37 sts you still have on your needles. turn your work. heel: work the two rows of heel chart 17 times (34 rows all together)

Pattern illustration

turn heel: WS: sll yf, p21, p2tog, pl, turn RS: sll yb, k8, ssk, k1, turn WS: sl1 yf, purl to 1 stitch before gap, p2tog, pl, turn RS: sll yb, knit to 1 stitch before gap, ssk, k1, turn repeat the last 2 rows until all sts have been worked, don't turn after the last RS row. (23 sts left) gusset: pick up and knit 17 sts along side of heel flap, pick up one more st between flap and instep, don't knit this one, but just shift it to the instep needle where all the other 38 held instep sts are. work the instep sts in leg + instep pattern as established (i.e. you continue with row 27 of that chart, thus you will purl the st you just picked up), work all the sts of that line line of instep pattern, then pick up 1 st between instep and heel flap and knit it, pick up 17 more sts along side of heel flap and knit them. knit the 40 remaining sole sts. this is the new beginning of the round. (now you have 39 instep sts and 58 sole sts.)

gusset decrease:

round 1: instep: work instep in pattern as established sole: ssk, knit to 2 sts before instep, k2tog round 2: work instep in pattern as established, k across all sole sts work these 2 rounds 13 times (26 rounds total), decreasing 2 sts every other round. now there are 39 instep sts and 32 sole sts. foot: continue instep in pattern as charted, while always plain knitting all sole sts. work until foot is approx. 2 inches shorter than desired length, end after the last stitch of the sole after having worked one of the following instep rows: 10 or 20. (don't worry if foot is not quite long enough yet, you will be able to fix this later)

set-up for toe:

work the instep sts as charted in one of the toe setup lines below. make sure to choose the correct toe setup line that corresponds to the last instep row you have been working on the foot.

toe setup charts: work this line only if you ended after having worked instep row 10:

continue for both sizes:

having worked one of the toe setup rows above, knit all sole stitches. then knit the first st of instep and shift it to the sole needle, work the next 34 instep sts as they appear (ktbl the ktbls, p the purls), shift the last instep st onto the sole needle, knit all sole sts. now you have 34 instep sts and 34 sole sts. at this point the foot should be about 2 inches shorter than desired length. if it is not yet long enough, work some rounds like this: work the instep sts as they appear and plain knit all sole sts, until you have reached the necessary length.

toe:

round 1 : instep: ktbl, ktbl, then work all sts as they appear (ktbl the ktbls, p the purls) to 2 sts before end of instep, ktbl, ktbl sole: knit all sts round 2 : instep: ktbl, k2togtbl, work sts as they appear to 3 sts before end of instep, k2togtw, ktbl. sole: kl, ssk, k to 3 sts before end of sole, k2tog, k1. repeat these 2 rows until there are 32 sts left, then always work row 2 until there are 16 sts left.

finishing:

leaving a tail of at least 8 inches, cut yarn and close the toe using Kitchener stitch. weave in all ends, knit a second sock and enjoy!

about this pattern:

The Art of Fugue ("Die Kunst der Fuge") by Johann Sebastian Bach is an exercise in how far one can develop a single theme, in one key. With each successive fugue, Bach is treating his theme to a whole catalogue of contrapuntal variants—- inversion, diminution, augmentation, mirroring, doubling... He thus created a work so perfect in form, so infinitely beautiful that it was thought by many to be an adequate human representation of the harmonia mundi. The pattern of these socks consists of three simple parallel lines which mirror and slant towards and against each other, thus forming a complex, attractive all-over design.
