The Dollmaker's Sock: A Detailed Cuff-Down Knitting Pattern with Heel Flap and Gusset

The Dollmaker's Sock

A cuff-down sock with heel flap and gusset. Size M, to fit average woman's foot. Size may be adjusted by adding or subtracting stitches in the Jacob's Ladder pattern at the beginning and end of each repeat. Lace pattern makes it a fairly stretchy sock. 100 grams fingering weight yarn. Blue sample shown in Barking Dog Yarns Sirius, 100% Merino Wool, in colorway "Jimmy Buffet". Yellow sample shown in BDY Sirius in colorway"Colonel Mustard." This pattern should work especially well in any of BDY's “Flashdyed" yarns or in any solid or semisolid yarn. Size 1 needles, double pointed or circular, your choice, or size to get gauge. Gauge: 8 st=1 inch, 12 rows = 1 inch.

Cuff:

Cast on 64 stitches. Join to knit in the round, remembering not to twist. Following Chart 1, knit in ribbing for 12 rows.

Leg:

Heel flap:

Turn to begin heel flap on the wrong side. Heel flap is worked flat over 32 stitches. Row 1: Slip 1, purl 31, turn Row 2: \*Slip 1, K1, repeat from \* to end. Repeat rows 1 and 2 until heel flap measures 2 12 inches, or as needed to fit.

Heel turn:

Row 1: Slip 1, P17, P2tog, P1, turn. Row 2: Slip 1, K5, SSK, K1, turn. Row 3: Slip 1, purl until 1 stitch before the gap created by the turn, P2tog, P1, turn. Row 4: Slip 1, knit until 1 stitch before the gap, SSK, K1, turn. Repeat rows 3 and 4 until all stitches are consumed. You should end on a right side row. The last repeat on each row will end with P2tog or SSK.

Gusset:

With right side facing, pick up and knit 1 stitch in each slipped stitch along edge of heel flap. Pick up and knit 2 together across the gap between the help flap and the instep. Following chart 2 and beginning at row 1, knit across instep. Pick up and knit 2 together across the gap between the instep and the heel flap. Pick up and knit 1 stitch in each slipped stitch along the edge of the heel flap. Knit 9 stitches along back of heel. Slip remaining stitches purlwise onto the needle with first group of picked-up stitches. This denotes center of sole and become new start of round. Knit to 3 stitches before instep, K2tog, K1. Knit to instep, continue in pattern across instep, K1, K1tbl, K to end of round. Continue these two rows until 32 stitches remain on sole.

Foot:

Knit sole stitches while following pattern until foot is approximately 2 inches shorter than total foot length.

Toe:

Knit to instep. Row 1: K1, SSK, K across instep to 3 stitches before end of instep, K2tog, K1, K1, SSK, K across sole to 3 stitches before end of sole, K2tog, K1. Row 2: Knit all stitches. Repeat these 2 rows until 32 stitches remain. Repeat Row 1 until 12 stitches remain. Cut yarn. Use kitchener stitch to graft toe stitches together. Weave in ends & enjoy your new socks! This sock was named after one of the visually impaired crafters I work with at New Jersey Blind Citizens Association. Before she lost her sight to macular degeneration and a stroke, she made beautiful dolls, with hand-sewn dresses and hand-painted faces. At 94, she continues to crochet blankets and scarves for those less fortunate thanherself.
