Game of Thrones - House Stark: Direwolf Illusion Knitting Pattern with Charts and Instructions

Game of Thrones - House Stark: Direwolf Illusion

Pattern illustration

A bit about Illusion Knitting

llusion knitting or Shadow knitting is very simple but effective method using basic knit stitches. The illusion is created by combining Knit with Purl stitches in order to create a raised textured surface through positive and negative spaces. This means that you use Knit stitches to create the parts you want to be seen and Purl stitches to emphasise the Knit ridge. The Scarf when viewed straight looks like stripes but then when seen from a slight angle, the raised purl stitches are seen and the pattern comes to life. It looks impressive but is very simple to knit, as long as you can knit and purl. There is a chart and also written instructions. Above are images of the Direwolf pattern, viewed at an angle, the reverse side (ws) and a Close up of the right side (RS). Game of Thrones - House Stark: Direwolf Illusion, including charts and pattern, @2012 by Louise Williams. What you need:

Wool/Yarn:

2 colours of wool to represent the House colours (l tend to use a standard Double Knit) (you can use a thinner or thicker wool which will affect the final size) For each there will be: - main colour/MC (background) - contrasting colour/CC (image)

House Colours:

- Stark: Direwolf = Black (MC) / White (CC) - Lannister: Lion = Crimson (MC) / Gold (CC) - Baratheon: Stag = Gold (MC) / Black (CC) - Greyjoy: Octopus = Black (MC) / Gold (CC) - Tully: Trout = Blue (MC) / Silver (CC) - Targaryen: Dragon = Black (MC) / Red (CC) - Arryn: Moon & Falcon = Blue (MC) / white (CC) - Tyrell: Rose = Green (MC) / Yellow (CC)

Needles:

4mm (Us 6) needles (this is preference could use smaller/larger depending on wool)

Final Size:

Width = 46cm / 18nches Approximately Length = 90cm / 35inches Approximately (you can alter these to your personal taste of course)

Gauge:

I did not measure a gauge but as long as the knit is fairly tight so that the knitted loops are not too tight or too loose and remains consistent then it will work.

Starting the Illusion knit:

:reated in 4 row sections (2 MC & 2 CC), starting with the main coloL I have cast on with 105 stitches, but you can cast on as many stitches as you need for your project. The chart is based on the cast on of 105 stitches. Cast on 105 stitches with MC and knit 1 row - all further odd numbered (right side) rows are knit rows. - the chart is worked on the even rows (wrong side) Change colours after every 2nd row, carrying the wool up the side.

Reading the chart:

Read the charts from bottom to top, left to right. Each row of the chart you knit twice - once in the MC and then in the CC - following the key. remembering to knit every odd row. Charts on the following pages. Game of Thrones - House Stark: Direwolf Illusion, including charts and pattern, @2012 by Louise Williams.
