lives in Westgate Buildings in Bath. This is not the smartest address, and she has found herself in reduced economiccircumstances since her latehusband has died. Despite her suffering and ilness, Nurse Rooke has taught Mrs. Smith to knit, and it is through her knitting that Mrs. Smith is able to occupy her mind, busy her hands, and still provide some assistance to those poorer than she. This wasn't just for pure kind generosity...these acts of charity also affirm to both Mrs. Smith and her community that despite her current economic distress, she is still a lady of the upper class, as providing charity for the poor was primarily the work of wealthy women. A thread case would provide a safe place for thread (which was not sold on spools, but instead sold in lengths that were then folded and twisted, much like a hank of yarn) and pins and needles, which were quite expensive at the time. Traditionally a thread case would have several pockets and fold, but this case is designed to hold a felt and insert (directions for the insert are also included in this pattern) or to be used simply as a pouch for small and delicate items.

FINSIHING: Weave a satin ribbon through the double yarn-overs at the top of the bag, tying an overhand knot to form a loop. You may wish to sew some additional glass beads to the ends of the yarn.
Thread Case Tnsenf:
PREPARING YOUR MATERIALS: Using your pinking shears, cut the following shapes: one 2.5"x7" rectangle for the outside of the thread case (felt) one 2.5"x7" rectangle for the inner pin sheets (fabric scraps) two 1.5"x7" rectangles for the inner pockets (fabric scraps) {sample shown with one pocket}

You will also need 18" of thin ribbon or sturdy yarn for a closure tie SEWING UP: Using your needle and thread (or sewing machine if preferred), place & sew the pockets onto the inner pin sheet as shown in the schematic.

Place the inner pin sheet to fit just inside the outside felt cover and sew a binding seam along the middle as shown on the schematic. Attach the yarn or ribbon to the outside spine of the thread case so that you may use it to keep the thread case closed & preserve the treasures inside.
