Before you start
Read the instructions carefully before you start in order to understand the logic of the short row sections worked in the main color. The short rows are worked using the wrap and turn technique referred to as w&t. If the technique is unfamiliar to you please study it on the internet or in The Arch Bridge Kerchief instructions. Note that the pattern includes instructions for two more CO stitch counts in case your gauge is significantly tighter than suggested or you want a looser hat. Instructions concerning the larger stitch counts are given in parentheses.
INSTRUCTIONS
Using the main color (MC) yarn CO 104 (112, 120) sts onto the smaller needle. Knit one round and purl one round in MC. Then knit one round and purl one round in the contrasting color (CC). Repeat similar MC and CC stripes two more times (= altogether 3 MC stripes and 3 CC stripes). If you want to have a longer hat or your row gauge is significantly tighter than suggested, work as many stripes as you want, ending with a CC stripe. Switch to the larger needle and start working the stripes which are partly constructed with short rows.
1st MC stripe (gray)
RS: K52 (k56, k60) sts and place marker. K6, w&t. WS: Knit to the marker, slip marker (sm) and k6, w&t. RS: Knit until the end of the round, slipping the marker along the way. Purl one more round in MC, slipping the marker along the way.
CC stripe (off white)
With CC knit one round and purl one round, slipping the marker along the way.
2nd MC stripe
RS: Knit to the marker, sm, k6, w&t. WS: Knit to the marker, sm, k6, w&t. RS: Knit to the marker, sm, k12, w&t. WS: Knit to the marker, sm, k12, w&t. RS: Knit until the end of the round, slipping the marker along the way. Purl one more round in MC, slipping the marker along the way. Work CC stripe as described above. Work the following MC stripes so that at the beginning of each MC stripe there's a widening sector of short rows. The 3rd MC stripe is started as the 2nd MC stripe but a third short row pair is worked after the second short row pair. In the third short row pair 3 x 6 = 18 knit stitches are worked after the marker on both RS and WS rows. In the 4th MC stripe there are four short row pairs and 4 x 6 = 24 knit stitches are worked after the marker in the fourth short row pair. Each MC stripe is finished with a full purl round. After finishing altogether 8 (8, 9) MC stripes that include short rows, work one more CC stripe. Cut CC yarn. Knit one round and purl one round in MC. If you want to have a longer hat, you can make as many knit and purl round repeats in the MC as you want. There are two alternative decreases to finish the hat. Choose either the starry decreases or the round decreases.
Starry decreases
Rnd 1: \*k5 (k6, k6), s2kp, k5 (k5, k6)\*, repeat \* - \* to the end of the round Rnd 2: purl Rnd 3: \*k4 (k5, k5), s2kp, k4 (k4, k5)\*, repeat \* _ \* to the end of the round Rnd 4: purl Continue the established pattern so that there are two fewer stitches between the decreases on each decrease round. Purl the even rounds. Work decreases until 24 (16, 24) sts remain and you have just worked a purl round. For the hats of smallest and largest CO stitch counts work decreases as established until 8 sts remain. For the hat with 112 C0 sts work the last decrease as follows: k2tog, repeat until the end of the round (= 8 sts remain). Cut yarn and pull through the remaining stitches. Fasten tight. Soak and block if desired. Weave in ends.

Round decreases
Knit one round and purl one round in MC. Work decreases asfollows: Rnd 1: \*k2, k2tog\*, repeat \* - \* to the end of the round Rnd 2: purl Rnd 3: knit Rnd 4: purl Rnd 5: \*k1, k2tog\*, repeat \* -\* to the end of the round Rnds 6 - 8: work as 2 - 4 Rnd 9: \*k2tog\*, repeat to the end of the round Rnd 10: purl Rnd 11: \*k2tog\*, repeat to the end of the round (Rnd 12: purl) (Rnd 13: \*k2tog\*, repeat to the end of the round) Cut yarn and pull through the remaining stitches. Fasten tight. Soak and block if desired. Weave in ends.
