NARRAGANSETT BAY TOWEL SET

Inspired by the boats that dot the coastline of Rhode Island, this towel set makes a thoughtful gift for a hostess, a housewarming, a new bride or even a bride-to-be. One towel features a motif of signal flags, used by ships to spell out messages and to celebrate special occasions. The other towel features a lace motif that resembles the sailboats traversing Narragansett Bay in the summer and was inspired by the "Arrowheads" stitch pattern in Sterling's Big Book of Knitting Stitch Patterns. The sailboat towel pattern includes both written and charted instructions. Best of all, the combination of cotton and acrylic in the suggested yarn gives the towels softness and drape while making them durable and machine washable and dryable!

Pattern Abbreviations
yo: yarnover (wrap yarn around right needle once from front to back). If the stitch preceding the yarnover has been purled, then the yarnover will consist of the yarn going over the top of the right needle to the back of the work, since the yarn is already at the front of the work from the preceding purl stitch. ssk: slip 1 stitch (as if to knit it) onto the right needle, slip a second stitch (as if to knit it) onto the right needle, insert the left needle into the front of the 2 slipped stitches, and knit the 2 slipped stitches together. sl 2 sts knitwise: slip 2 stitches (as if to knit both of them) at the same time from the left to the right needle, and slip both of them as if they were to be knit. p2sso: pass the 2 slipped stitches over the stitch that has just been knit. k2tog: knit 2 stitches together to create one stitch.
Border Instructions
The long sides of each towel feature a border worked over 4 rows. The border is 8 stitches wide on each side of the towel, and it is worked at the same time, on each side of the towel, while the central motif is worked in the middle of the towel. The border is begun when the first pattern row is begun, and the border is completed when the last pattern row is completed. Border rows 1 (RS), 2 (WS), and 3 (RS): k8. Border row 4 (WS): p8. These 4 rows form the border pattern. Continue to work the border pattern as long as the central motif is being worked in the middle of the towel.

\*\*NB\*\*: The border stitches are not included in the instructions for the central motifs, except where explicitly specified. Cast on 60 stitches using your preferred cast on method (a long-tail cast on was used for the towel shown). Knit one row, including across border stitches.
