Dueling Gradients Cowlo: A Reversible, Stranded Knitting Project with Versatile Length Options

Dueling Gradients Cowlo by Deborah Tomasello

Pattern illustration

The beauty of this beauty is multifaceted. First, it is knit in the round (no purling!). Second, it is reversible, showing a different pattern on each side. Third, because it is stranded and knit it the round, it is four-times as thick with warm, cozy wool comfort than an ordinary cowl would be. Its versatility is also a plus. The knitter can decide how long to make it, and by adding two rows of buttons, she can make it snug as a neck warmer (the extra length tucked inside the cowl), or button on the end for a longer cowl. I LoVE this one! Size: Approx. 7"'wide x whatever length you desire. Each repeat is approx. 6.5 inches long after blocking. Cover is only 3 repeats. Materials: 4 balls each of KnitPicks Palette in two opposing color gradients. Cover cowl shows green and purple gradiated shades of Palette: Forest Heather Bouquet Heather Opal Heather Comfrey Spearmint Ice Lily Sea Grass Gosling One each 16 inch #3 and #8 needles tapestry needle 12 Buttons Crochet hook for loops Gauge: gauge is not important here. Instructions: With color of first round and smaller needle, CO 83 sts. Work 5 rounds in garter (You will have to purl every other round here to achieve garter). Follow CHART, working the 32-row repeat as many times as you want to desired length. Keep floats loose and even. Finishing: Tie and trim all yarn ends. Soak and block in half with full pattern on each side. Make button loops with crochet hook. (See video tutorial here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lySeOLJIveY) Add two rounds of buttons: two rows of 3 on each side, so the cowl can be buttoned loosely or snugly.
