"THE ALL-NEBRASKA CORNHUSKER SCARF'
by Maryjane Dunn (a Nebraska native) July 2009 This scarf was originally designed and knitted as a gift for Stephanie Johanns, wife of Mike Johanns, U.S. Senator from Nebraska. Supporting Nebraska beyond football! Yarn: Brown Sheep (a Nebraska yarn!) Lanaloft, 3 skeins Needles: Size 8 Gauge: Not important Beads: 6/0 glass beads (one 4 oz. package of "Bead Treasures" seed bead mixed brown from Hobby Lobby is sufficient) Finished size: 12" x 76" excluding fringe NOTE: This scarf pattern is based on three design panels. The two outer panels represent the corn rows ("furrows") and are a basic feathered lace ladder stitch pattern. The inner panel is my modification of the "Leaves on Branches" stitch pattern, made to look like corn stalks. The pattern as written will be knit two times, and then joined, so that the corn stalks all grow up! Cast on 44 stitches. Knit 4 rows, slipping first stitch of each row purlwise. Row 1: (RS) [left panel] Sl1pw, K2, K2T, (YO) twice, SSK, K2T, (YO) twice, SSK, K1, pm, [center panel] P9, K2, P9, pm, [right panel] K1, K2T, YO twice, SSK, K2T, YO twice, SSK, K3 Row 2: [left panel] Sllpw, K1, P1, (p1, k1) into double YO, P1, (p1, k1) into double YO, P2, [center panel] K9, P2, K9, [right panel] P2 (p1, k1) into double YO, P1, (p1, k1) into double YO, P2, K2 Row 3: [left panel, and all odd rows throughout] Repeat as for Row 1, Icenter panel] P9, K1, LT, P8, [right panel, and all odd rows throughout] repeat as for Row 1 Row 4: [left panel, and all even rows throughout] Repeat as for Row 2, [center panel] K7, LCP, P2, K9, [right panel, and all even rows throughout] repeat as for Row 2 Row 5: [center panel, throughout] P9, K1, LT, LT, P6 Row 6: K5, LCP, P4, K9 Row 7: P9, K2, LC, K1, LT, P4 Row 8: K3, LCP, P3, K1, P2, K9 Row 9: P8, RT, K1, P1, LC, K3, P3 Row 10: K3, P4, K2, P2, RCP, K7 Row 11: P6, RT, RT, K1, P2, LC, K2, P3 Row 12: K3, P3, K3, P4, RCP, K5 \*Row 13": P4, RT, K1, RC, K2, P3, LC, K1, P3 Row 14: K3, P2, K4, P2, K1, P3, RCP, K3 Row 15: P3, K3, RC, P1, K1, LT, P3, LC, P3 Row 16: K3, P1, K3, LCP, P2, K2, P4, K3 Row 17: P3, K2, RC, P2, K1, LT, LT, P6 Row 18: K5, LCP, P4, K3, P3, K3 Row 20: P3, K1, RC, P3, K2, LC, K1, LT, P4 Row 21: K3, LCP, P3, K1, P2, K4, P2, K3 Row 22: P3, RC, P3, RT, K1, P1, LC, K3, P3 Row 23: K3, P4, K2, P2, RCP, K3, P1, K3 Row 24: P6, RT, RT, K1, P2, LC, K2, P3 Row 25: K3, P3, K3, P4, RCP, K5\* \*Repeat Rows 13 - 25 Row 26: P4, RT, K1, RC, K2, P3, LC, K1, P3 Row 27: K3, P2, K4, P2, K1, P3, RCP, K3 Row 28: P3, K3, RC, P1, K2, P4, LC, P3 Row 29: K3, P1, K5, P2, K2, P4, K3 Row 30: P3, K2, RC, P1, RT, LT, P8 Row 31: K7, LCP, P2, RCP, K1, P3, K3 Row 32: P3, K1, RC, P1, K1, P1, K2, P1, K1, P7 Row 33: K7, P1, K1, P2, K1, P1, K2, RCP, K3 Row 34: P7, K1, P1, K2, P1, K1, P7 Row 35: K7, P1, K1, P2, K1, P1, K7 Row 36: P7, K1, P1, K2, P1, K1, P7 Row 37: K7, P1, K1, P2, K1, P1, K7 Row 38: P20 Row 39: K20 Row 40: P20 Row 41: K20

Repeat Pattern two more times, ending the second time with Row 39. Place stitches on stitch holder. Cast on and make the second half of the scarf. Connect two halves with either 3-needle bind-off or Kitchener stitch. Abbreviations: RT = Right twist. Leaving first stitch on left needle, knit 2nd stitch, then knit 1st stitch, and move both from left needle. RC = Right cross. Leaving first stitch on left needle, knit the 2nd stitch, then purl the 1st stitch, and move both from left needle. (Some stitch patterns call this a Right Purl Twist) RCP = Right crossover purl. Leaving first stitch on the left needle, purl the 2nd stitch, then purl the 1st stitch, and move both from the left needle. LT = Left twist. Slip the Ist stitch onto dpn or cable needle and hold in front. Knit the 2nd stitch as normal, then knit the stitch from the dpn. LC = Left cross. Slip the 1st stitch onto dpn or cable needle and hold in front. Purl the 2nd stitch as normal, then knit the stitch from the dpn. (Some stitch patterns call this a Left Cross Purl) LCP = Left crossover purl. Slip the Ist stitch onto dpn or cable needle and hold in front. Purl the 2nd stitch as normal, then purl the stitch from the dpn.

Beaded ears of corn:
Thread a beading needle with about 20" of beading string. Make a knot about 4" from the end. String on 1 green bead, 9 yellow beads, and 1 green bead. Slip needle back through 2nd bead, then string on 8 yellow beads. Slip the needle through the green bead (closest to knot) and string on 10 green beads. Tie off. Affix to scarf using ends of beading string. (Note: I am not a "beader" so this is probably not a great set of instructions. )
Other colorways:
Consider making a fall harvest scarf by using "Mulling Spice" or "Feather Gold" colorway, and using the leftover beads in browns and reds as Indian corn. Or make the side panels (the furrows) in "Cliff Rock" or "Maple Praline", and the center panel in either a green or gold.
