SEAHORSE SCARF

A BOUT THE PATTERN
The Seahorse Scarf is half way between a shawl and a scarf - designed to be used when you need to wrap up warm, rather than look pretty on a summer evening. Who said scarves have to be square? The beauty of the elongated triangle is in its practicality - you get the maximum warm scarf benefit from the minimum materials - which I personally believe is more than enough justification to knit this light item in some delicious yarn, completely for oneself (or a VERY lucky friend). The pattern is essentially a repeat of a single stitch, alongside a margin containing the bobbles. The increase and decrease is achieved by adding or subtracting a single stitch every 48 rows. I'm ever so slightly irritated when a beautiful scarf flaps over to have some ugly scene in public, and so have been knitting reversible stitches exclusively in scarves for the last couple of seasons. I loved an Escher's Stairs basketweave in a grey Merino for two winters, however found myself hankering after something a little more feminine, something with grace and a fluid shape... and I have to admit to being a little bit obsessed with the lace leaf design - with its ever so pleasing tessellations - which inevitably lead me to South Bohemian Lace Leaf stitch. So this season. In honour of the delightful Hippocampus Hippocampus - short-snouted Seahorse - which has been found in the London Thames for the first time, thanks to cleaner water allowing a breeding population of the creatures to establish itself. MEASUREMENTS& MATERIALS
You will need: 100g or 3.5 oz of good quality dk/8 ply/11wpi yarn such as Manos Del Uruguay Merino Silk blend. You may need slightly more yarn if using something heavier - I advise you purchase 150g if using a yarn other than the silk blend recommended. 4mm or Us 6 knitting needles. Tension: 22 stitches and 24 rows to 4 in. Dimensions 1 & a half metres or 5.5 feet long 20 cm or 8in at the widest part On one side of your work there is a margin of 3 stockinette stitches, in which you will make a bobble every six rows. A new leaf is introduced to the work every one and a half repeats of the leaf pattern, leading out of this margin. You will be instructed to add two extra stitches a couple of rows before you start the new leaf. The bobbles will force the scarf to corkscrewattheends. I recommend that you knit in the end of yarn when you start knitting the scarf so you don't have a scraggy tail while you're knitting - knit it into the rows, but not the bobbles. For neat edges after the first stitch of each row pull the yarn tight. k1 - knit 1 p1 - purl 1 Repeat from \* across - the pattern is made of a set of stitches which starts at the\* symbol and continues along the row. Please note that you will not necessarily complete a repeat before you get to the end of the row. Remember to leave the margin for the bobbles or the single selvedge stitch on the end of the row. End purl 1 or End knit 3 - the last three stitches on odd rows and last stitch on even rows are not a repeat of the pattern across the rest of the row. Page 3 NEW BOHEMIAN KNITTING PATTERN ? NICOLA ROBINSONOVA YO - yarn over - wrap the yarn around the right needle. Before a knit stitch, this creates a new stitch by placing the yarn over the top of the right hand needle. Before a purl stitch this creates a new stitch by placing the yarn over the top of the right hand needle and then back round underneath - wrapping the yarn 360° U clockwise around the right hand needle. If the holes don't come out visible and evenly spaced after you have purled them in the next row, please check your method. k2tog - A knit stitch where you put the right needle through two loops at the same time, reducing two stitches to one. SKPO - slip 1 knitwise (as if you were going to knit it), knit 1, pass slipped stitch over the knitted stitch. This is sometimes written as SKPSSO or used in placeofSsk. <2P - slip 1 knitwise, k2tog, Pass the slipped stitch over the k2tog To make neat bobbles, I pull the yarn firmly after the first stitch in each row is completed, so that the base of the stitch is pulled tight. When the bobble is finished, ensure that the flat side with the Vs is facing the same way as the Vs in the margin of 3 stitches. 1. Knit, purl and knit into one stitch, turn your work 2. Purl 3, turn. 3. Knit 1, knit, purl and knit into one stitch, knit 1, turn 4. Purl 5, turn 5. Knit 1, SK2P, knit one, turn 6. Purl 3, turn. 7. SK2P. The pattern is charted top down, rather than bottom up, to illustrate the written instructions. Rows are read alternately left to right and right to left. This is an asymmetrical pattern. The chart and full instructions can be found in the next document (until I can figure out how to put a spreadsheet in my text doc). Page 4 NEW BOHEMIAN KNITTING PATTERN ? NICOLA ROBINSONOVA
