Very Vanilla Socks

MATERIALS:
Conjoined Creations Flat Feet 4 ply (Fingering) yarn, 80% Merino, 20% Nylon, 1 x 100g skein (411m/450yds) 2.25mm (US 1) 2 x Circular needles, or set of DPNS 3 x stitch markers
ABBREVIATIONS:
Plain, vanilla socks. SOCKS
Cast on 60 sts and join - being careful not to twist sts. Place a marker for the beginning of rnd.
Cuff
Rnds 1-25: K1, P1.
Leg
Rnd 1: K around.
Continue to K each rnd until 60 rnds have been worked. Sock leg should measure approx. 16cm (6 %"), or until length desired.
Heel Flap
The heel flap is worked back and forth on half of the sts. The remaining 30 sts will be worked later for the instep. Row 1: \*Sl 1, K1\* repeat from \* to end of row, turn. Row 2: Sl 1, P to end of row, turn. Repeat these two rows until 34 rows have been worked.
Turn Heel
Row 1: Starting on a RS row, K17, SSK, K1, turn. Row 2: Sl 1, P5, P2tog, P1 turn. Row 3: Sl 1, K across to st before the gap, SSK, K1, turn. Row 4: Sl 1, P across to st before the gap, P2tog, P1, turn. Repeat rows 3 and 4 until there are no gap sts left. Turn, and K to the middle of the heel. Place a marker for new beginning of rnd.
Gusset
K across remaining heel sts. Pick up and K 17 sts through the loops of the slipped sts along the left heel flap. Place a marker for gusset shaping. K across the instep sts (the 30 sts that were left unworked). Place a marker for gusset shaping.Pick up and K 17 sts (the same number as the left side) through the loops of the slipped sts along the right heel flap, K to beginning of rnd marker.
Shape Gusset
Hint: The picked up sts will be tighter if K through the back loops on the next rnd only. Next rnd: K across until 2 sts before the first gusset marker, K2tog, K across until you reach the second gusset marker, SSK, K to beginning of rnd marker. Rnd 1: K until 3 sts before first gusset marker, K2tog, K1, K across for instep until the second gusset marker, K1, SSK, K to beginning of rnd marker. Rnd 2: K around. Repeat these two rnds until 60 sts remain.
Foot
K all rnds until sock measures approx. 19cm (7 %") from back of heel - or until sock measures approx. 4cm (1.5") less than desired foot length.
Toe
Rnd 1: K until 3 sts before first gusset marker, K2tog, K1, slip marker, K1, SSK, K until 3 sts before second gusset marker, K2 tog, K1, slip marker, K1, SSK, K to beginning of rnd marker. Rnd 2: K around. Work these two rnds until you have 40 sts remaining. Then: Repeat Rnd 1 until you have 20 sts remaining. Next: K the last 5 sts, yarn is now at the side of the toes and the sock is ready to be grafted.
Finishing
Graft toes closed using Kitchener stitch or by following the 'Graft Toe Closed' instuctions on page 3. Weave in ends.
Graft Toe Closed
Cut yarn, leaving a tail approx. 50cm (20") long. Thread this onto a tapestry needle. Step 1: Insert the needle through the 1"t st on the back needle as if to K. Pull the yarn through, but leave the st on the needle. Step 2: Insert the needle through the 1"t st on the front needle as if to K. Pull the yarn through and drop this st off the needle. Step 3: Insert the needle through the next st on the front needle as if to P. Pull the yarn through and leave the st on the needle. Step 4: Insert the needle through the 1"t st on the back needle (the st left on the needle in Step 1) as if to P. Pull the yarn through and drop the st off the needle. Repeat these four steps until all the sts are worked.
