YUNA
Living in Korea, I get to see a prominent seed of fashion, some being more on the traditional side, while others being nearly on the side of wacky. One thing I have noticed girls wearing in the cooler months are big circular shrugs and neck warmers. And the outfit can't be complete without a bow. Therefore, I give you Yuna (or rather, Yun Ah), a chunky cabled shoulder shrug with a big floppy bow (optional, of course). One size fits most.
Notions:
Size US 11 (UK 8mm) circular needle, 16 inches 160g wool spun up into a bulky 2 ply yarn (approximately 6 or 8 WP1); 200 yards Reclaimed silk ribbon from Darn Good Yarn, approximately 5 inches wide and 60 inches long Abbreviations: CO: cast on BO: bind off k: knit p: purl WS: wrong side (the side worn next to the skin) COPYRIGHT 2O13 JENNIFER BEAMER EXPERTLY DYED: ART BY SCIENCE Gauge: Approximately 12 stitches per 4 inches in a 2x2 (k2, p2) rib pattern

Pattern: CO 96 stitches and join for working in the round, placing a stitch marker to indicate the start of the round. Be careful not to twist the stitches. K2, P2 for 5 rows. Begin cable setup: K4, pl, k8, pl, k4, p2, and continue the established k2, p2 pattern for the rest of the round. Knit in this pattern for 3 more rounds. First and Third 2x2 cables (these are the 2 flanking cables): Slip the first 2 stitches purlwise onto a cable (or spare) needle and hold them to the back (WS) of the work. K2, then knit the 2 stitches from the cable (or spare) needle. P1, k8, pl, Slip the next 2 stitches purlwise onto a cable (or spare) needle and hold the needle to the back of the work, k2, then knit the 2 stitches on the cable needle, p2. Continue knitting in k2, p2 pattern for the end of the round. Knit in established pattern for 4 more rounds. Second 4x4 cable (this is the larger cable in between the 2 flanking cables): K4, p1, slip the next 4 stitches purlwise and hold to the back of the work, k4, knit the 4 stitches on the cable needle, pl, k4, p2. Continue knitting in k2, p2 pattern for the end of the round. Knit in established pattern for 4 more rounds.

To visualize how to work the cable patterns from now until you're finished, you will be alternating between making the flanking cables (the 2x2 cables) and the central cable (the 4x4 cable) every 4 rows. For example, we just finished making the central cable (the 4x4 cable), so the next cables we'll make are the 2 flanking cables (the 2x2 cables). Then you'll knit in pattern for 4 more rounds, then you'll make the central cable again. You will repeat the flanking cable pattern 4 times. To count how many cables you've made, just count the number of twists on the flanking cables (the 2x2 cables). If you would prefer to make the shoulder shrug longer, just add more cables. When you've made your 4th flanking cable, you will begin the bind off process. Knit 4 rows in COPYRIGHT 2O13 JENNIFER BEAMER EXPERTLY DYED: ART BY SCIENCE established pattern. Switch to K2P2 ribbing for 5 rows. BO in pattern. To add the ribbon at the top, just thread a piece of silk through the bind off loops (I find my bind off to be slightly tighter than my cast on loops, just choose the tightest loops to be the top part of the shrug). I alternated threading the silk over the purl stitches and under the knit stitches. You can thread the silk through however you'd like, just be consistent. When finished, tie in a pretty bow or make a square knot. Wash your garment in warm soapy water, rinse thoroughly, then hang to dry. It is not necessary to block your shrug.
