This is not to be reproduced for commercial use, although I am happy for it to be used for charitable causes. 60g / 177 meters (approx) Double knit yarn (Yarn used 'Special' by Stylecraft - 295m / 100g) 3.5mm Circular needles / Double Points as preferred Stitch holder or waste yarn / spare needle to hold 1 ear flap 4mm crochet hook Stitch Marker To fit an Small / Medium ladies head (approx circumference 52cm) Tension 2osts over 1ocm in Moss Stitch on 3.5mm needles (adiust heedle size t0 obtain correCt tension)
Ear Flap (make 2)
With 3.5mm needles Cast on 6 sts Row 1 (and all ODD rows) - Purl Row 2 - KFB, K4, KFB (8 StS) Row 4 - KFB, K6, KFB (10 StS) Row 6 - KFB, K8, KFB (12 StS) Row 16 - KFB, K18, KFB (22 stS) RoW 18 - KFB, K20. KFB (24 StS) Row 20 - KFB, K22, KFB (26 StS) Row 21 - Purl Break yarn and put these sts onto a holder - This is the Left Ear Flap Repeat Rows 1 - 21 for the right ear flap, DO NOT break yarn.
Casting on for the Hat
Begin with the right Ear Flap, knit these 26 sts, turn and Cast on 19 sts for the back, turn and knit the 26 sts from the left flap on the holder, turn and cast on 28 sts for thefront of thehat. Place marker and join in the round, either using Magic Loop or a short Circular Cable (16") or using DPN's. Be Careful not to twist. Round 1 - (K1,P1) - repeat t0 end of round Round 2 - (P1,K1) - repeat to end of round These 2 rounds form Moss Stitch (seed stitch in the USA) Continue in Moss Stitch until the hat measures 4" (1ocm) from the cast on edge (from where the ear flapjoins the hat) Increase 1 stitch (KFB) at the beginning of the next round (1oosts) then work 1" of plain stocking stitch (Knit all rounds) before decreasing for the crown.
Decreasing for the Crown
Round 1 - \*K18, K2tog, repeat from \* t0 end of round (95 sts) Round 2 - knit (and all even rounds through round 14) Round 3 - \*K17, K2tog, repeat from \* t0 end of round (90 sts) Round 5 - \*K16, K2t0g, repeat from \* t0 end of round (85 sts) Round 7 - \*K15, K2tog, repeat from \* to end of round (80 sts) Round 9 - \*K14, K2tog, repeat from \* t0 end of round (75 sts) Round 11 - \*K13, K2tog, repeat from \* t0 end of round (70 sts) Round 13 - \*K12, K2t0g, repeat from \* t0 end of round (65 sts) Round 15 - \*K11, K2t0g, repeat from \* to end of round (60 sts) Round 16 - \*K10, K2tog, repeat from \* t0 end of round (55 sts) Round 17 - \*K9, K2tog, repeat from \* t0 end of round (50 sts) Round 18 - \*K8, K2t0g, repeat from \* t0 end of round (45 sts) Round 19 - \*K7, K2t0g, repeat from \* t0 end of round (40 sts) Round 20 - \*K6, K2tog, repeat from \* t0 end of round (35 sts) Round 21 - \*K5, K2tog, repeat from \* t0 end of round (30 sts) Round 22 - \*K2tog, repeat from \* t0 end of round (15 sts) Round 23 - \*K3, K2tog, repeat from \* to end of round (12 sts) Break yarn, draw through remaining 12 sts and pull tight, fastel Weave in all ends on hat Using a 4mm crochet hook, Double Crochet around the 3 sides of each earflap, spacing stitches so they lie flat (the amount of sts you use is personal choice here).
To make the Tassels (make 2)
Cut 12 lengths (approx 3o" long) of yarn. Using a crochet hook, take 2 lengths at a time half way through each of the 6 stitches in the bottom of the earflap, (so you have approx 15" both sides of the flap), repeat for the other lengths, and plait to desired length, fasten with a strand of yarn tied about 4cm from the bottom to make tassels. Trim ends to tidy. Repeat for other flap.
