Luna' s Shaul

[ feministy.com | liz@feministy.com ] contact [ version 1 |january 2011 ] pattern [ feministy |feministy fans group ravelry designed by Liz Abinante In case you hadn't noticed, I'm a bit of a nerd when it comes to books. I obsessively read science fiction and fantasy novels for pure entertainment value, and I've even been known to get sucked into the occasional young adult series. This shawl was born from my love of Harry Potter, and one of my favorite characters in particular: Luna Lovegood. Luna is plucky, eccentric, adorable, and completely hilarious. The unique size and shape of the shawl remind me of something that Luna would wear, and the color (aptly named Luna Granite) is perfect for her unconventional wardrobe. When knit with sport weight yarn, the shawl becomes a delicate shawlette. Depending on your preferred method of wearing a thicker, rounded shawl, you may want to grab a shawl pin to help keep the shawl in place.

Yarn

Miss Babs Yummy Sport (approximately 335 yds per 150 grams, sport weight) shown in Luna Granite. I suggest grabbing an extra skein just in case: I had about 1.5 yards left at the end of the shawl.

Substituting Fingering weight

The pattern can be knit using 1 skein of fingering weight yarn. Choose your needle size carefully: you don't want your cables too loose or your lace too tight.

Needles

One US 6 (4.0mm) circular needle, your choice of length (I'd recommend 24" or longer).

Gauge

4.5 sts per inch, 6.5 rows per inch. Stockinette stitch.

Finished Size

Shawlette, small 15.5 inches deep, 38 inch wingspan

Instructions

Set-up intrustructions are not charted. The lace and cable stitch patterns are charted and written (see page 5). Please be sure to read through the instructions completely before knitting. The cable and lace charts do not include the yarn over increases or the garter stitch border. These are included in the written instructions. For ease of blocking, instructions are provided for an optional garter stitch edge. This will help prevent the slight wave present at the shawl's edge.

Pattern illustration

If you prefer to work from the charts, you will need to read through the written instructions (next page) briefly to familiarize yourself with the yarn over increases on the right side rows.

Imcrease Stitch Counts

There are 3 different stitch count charts, one each for: set-up, cable repeats, and cable & lace repeats. Each chart counts the number of stitches on each row after it has been completed. Examples On the Set-Up chart, after completing row 11, you will have 45 stitches and will have worked 1/2 of a cable repeat. On Cable Repeats chart, after completing row 23, you will have 117 stitches and will have worked 3 cable repeats (plus the 1/2 cable repeat from the Set-Up).

Set-Up

Includes both right and wrong side rows. Even numbered rows are RS, odd numbered rows are WS. Row numbering begins with 2 (RS).
