Little Princess

This beautiful Shetland Style Shawl was made for my new Niece BUMP TO BE. My sister in law watched me dye the wool in colours which she liked, suitable for a girl (as she already knows the "flavour") and I showed her various stitch swatches and she chose Shetland Lace Stitch for the inner of the shawl as whilst they'd been staying with us we took her and my brother to Solva Woollen Mill where Faye saw some very nice scarves in a similar stitch. The other designs, I chose myself as a surprise for her and also remodelled the traditional lace edging adding faggoting stitches etc. Materials: 200 grams Woolhunters Outback Sock (100% Superwash Merino) 400 metres per 1o0 gram skein. It is possible to make this project in any other 4 ply/fingering/sock yarn providing that you have at least 8o0 metres in total but please be aware that differing types of yarn will not work as far and you may need extra yarn. Please ensure that you purchase sufficient yarn for your project as it is virtually impossible to replicate the colours in handpainted yarns. You can always make some nice bootees or other matching baby garments if you have any left-overs and there are plenty of free patterns for these on www.ravelry.com 1 pair of 3.75 mm (Us 5): 1 circular 3.75 mm needle providing is is at least 32 inches long, 4 stitch marker 1 double pointed needle size 3.75 mm. It is also possible to make a larger garment using larger needles and thicker yarn but you will need to adjust the yarn quantities.

Tension/Gauge

This is largely unimportant as you garment will be blocked to achieve the necessary size but it should be around 26 sts and 34 rows per 4 inch/10 cm square worked in stocking stitch.

Abbreviations

k = Knit p = Purl K2 tog = Knit 2 together Ssk = slip the next 2 stitches knitwise onto the right hand needle, insert left hand needle back into the stitches, knit the two together. (2 stitches become one and this makes a left slanting decrease). yo = yarn on needle wyifsl1p = with yarn to the front as if to purl slip one stitch purlways Other Abbreviations are given in the Charts provided.

Method:

Centre Square

Using 3.75 mm straight needles, invisible/lace cast on (if you are unsure how to do this there are many tutorial videos on Youtube) cast on 71 sts. Next Row, Wyifsl1p, p2 tog, p to end (70 sts). Follow Chart A starting at row 1 (RS) and work 8 row pattern 16 times. DONOTCASTOFF

Diamond & Squares Border

With your long circular needle, Knit 70 sts across your centre panel and place marker, then pick up 70 sts down left hand side of shawl picking up your stitches from the selvedge edge, place marker, pick up and knit 70 sts from invisible cast on, place marker, then pick up and knit 70 sts up right hand side of square and place marker (280 sts). You will now commence the shawl working in the ROUND ONLy. OPTIONAL ROUND: See Mandy's Shawl on the final page of the Chart Patterns to compare it with my original design if you do nt wish to work this round. \*K2, yo\* repeat from \* to \* to end of round. This gives a nice edging between the Shetland Stitch pattern and the commencement of the border and a ribbon may be threaded through these stitches if you so wish. Omit this round if you do not wish to do this. Then work Rounds 1-63 from Chart B to form the inner border of the shawl AT THE SAME TIME on the 1st and every odd numbered round, work as follows from the first stitch marker: k1, yo knit to 1 st before next marker yo, k1. Repeat this sequence each time you reach a marker, i.e. working 2 yo's for each side section and a total of 8 in every ODD numbered round ONLy. This will give the necessary increases to form the trapezoid corners of the shawl. OPTIONAL ROUND: \*K2, yo\* repeat from \* to \* to end of round. Work once further kint only round. Again this is only worked if you wish to thread ribbons through the yo's as before. DO NOT CAST OFF but break yarn leaving all stitches on the circular needle.

Brownie's Lace Knitted-on Border:

Using your 3.75 mm dpns and lace/invisible cast on method, cast on 10 sts, then commencing on the wrong side of your garment, work Rows 1-10 of Chart C working 5 single joins to the main garment for each chart repeat. Repeat this chart around all four edges of the shawl, working in double joints where necessary to ease the lace nicely round the 4 corners. Finish on Row 10 of Chart on reaching the start once more, cut yarn leaving a 12 inch tail thread then graft the stitches together from the beginning of this border to the stitches on your needle. Block piece so that it so that it measures approx. 38 inches square. Finally, many thanks to Mandy Scragg who tested this pattern for me by making this shawl for her new grandaughter. You can see Mandy's on the final page of the charts.

Mandy made her shawl in Lemon Popsical colourway and chose to omit the Optional Yo's rounds. I think she made a great job of it and I'm sure her new baby grandaughter will be delighted to snuggle into it when she arrives!
