Simple Fleur-de-Lis Washcloth Knitting Pattern for Charity by Noelle Williams Dempsey

Simple Jlew-de-lis washcloth

by Noelle Williams Dempsey, August 2005

A Fleur de Lis is an image often associated with the French Quarter and also happens to be the symbol for the New Orleans' football team, The Saints. I created this pattern to knit and send with bars of soap to shelters taking in Katrina survivors so they could feel clean and comforted during such a bad time. This was initiated by a yahoo group called "Cloths for Katrina"'. Charitable Copyright Notice: You are ABSOLUTELY given permission to knit and sell washcloths made from this pattern as long as the money is going to benefit a charity. Feel free to physically or electronically copy this pattern as many times as you'd like just please include my web address (http://www.noellesnoodles.com) and Charitable Copyright Notice in the post or printout. Yarn: I've used Debbie Bliss DK Cotton, Debbie Bliss Cotton Cashmerino, or Lion Cotton. Any kitchen cotton type yarn like Lily's Sugar n Cream or Peaches n Cream should work fine. I've found it's a lot easier to see the pattern using a solid color. Needles: I used Crystal Palace bamboos US size 6 but use whatever you're comfortable with. I recommend a 6, 7, or 8. Use a tighter gauge, the pattern of simple purls shows up much better with tighter stitches. Gauge: Doesn't really matter. The number of stitches for the finished object will be 30 stitches wide and 36 rows tal. The size of the finished cloth depends on the yarn, needle size, and your tension. Yes it's a little taller than wide but trust me it looks better that way. The 3 stitch/row garter border is written into the chart. Knit every stitch of the first and last two rows. Then knit the first and last three stitches of each row, otherwise work in stockinette and knit or purl the dark area depending on what side you're on. The neat part is its reversible. This is the one of the first patterns I've ever written so hopefully it's comprehensible.
