Chevron
A hat by Hollianna Bryan A little bit retro, a lot more chic. The Chevron Hat takes scraps and odd balls of yarn and makes stylish, fun headwear. Take this chance to use up your yarn scraps that can range from a foot or so long to partial skeins. You'll see that I haven't included instructions for the width of the chevron stripes. Decide on the color order and varying widths of the chevrons according to your own sense of design. I wanted a hat with some room in the crown, so this is not a skullcap. If you'd like a slouchier hat, add more pattern repeats before starting the crown; alternately, for a snugger hat, start the crown decreases earlier than the pattern requires. When deciding on your choice of size, please remember that the chevron pattern is quite tight; this hat has an increase written in to it to compensate. If you wish to vary the cast on, remember that the chevron motif is a 16-stitch repeat and that, to keep room in the hat, you will need an increase of one motif (16 stitches) at least between brim and body. With an unstretched brim of 14 inches, Baby makes a very definite baby hat. The Medium would fit a child to adult woman, or any head up to at least 22 inches, and is approximately 8 12 inches deep. The Large has room for a much larger head, and/or lots more hair. Materials: Any worsted weight yarn in your stash, any amount. Needles: US 6 (4.00 mm) and US 8 (5.00mm) needles, or to attain gauge. Gauge: 4 stitches x 8 rows in pattern = 1 inch Abbreviations: s2kp2: a twostitch decrease, slip two stitches purlwise, knit one stitch, pass the two slipped stitches over the knitted stitch. ml: make one stitch by lifting up the bar between two stitches with left needle and knitting through the back of the bar. Sizes Baby, Medium, Large. On US 6 needles, cast on 64 (80, 96) stitches and join to work in the round being careful not to twist the stitches. For the brim, knit a k2 p2 ribbing for 1 %2 (2, 2) inches. Copyright Hollianna Bryan 2012. You will now have 80 (96, 112) stitches. As the chevron pattern works quite tight, this increase will ensure room in the hat. For the body of the hat, knit the following two rows until the hat measures 5 1/2 (7, 7 12) inches from the cast on edge. End with Row 1 (the chevron row). Each chevron is a multiple of 16 stitches. Row 1: \* k1, m1, k6, s2kp2, k6, m1 \* Row 2: knit all The crown decrease will add an estimated 2 inches to the hat's final depth. As the chevron pattern will continue to the very top of the hat, this is a great place to use up really small scraps you have on hand. All decreases happen in the knit all rows and will be accounted for by diminishing the K6 part of the chevron. Row 1: \* k6,k2tog \* Row 2: \* k1, m1, [k5], s2kp2, [k5], m1 \* Row 3: \* k5, k2tog \* Row 4: \* k1, m1, [k4], s2kp2, [k4], m1 \* Row 5: \* k4, k2tog\* Row 6: \* k1, m1, [k3], s2kp2, [k3], m1 \* Row 7: \* k3, k2tog \* Row 8: \* k1, m1, [k2], s2kp2, [k2], m1 \* Row 9: \* k2, k2tog \* Row 10: \* k1, m1, [k1], s2kp2, [k1], m1 \* (last pattern row) Row 11: \* k1, k2tog \* Row 12: \*k2tog \* Cut yarn, pull through the remaining live stitches, and bind off. Weave in all ends and add a pompom if you desire.
