Multi-Colored Hat With or Without Earflaps Intermediate Skill Level Two Sizes to fit Toddlers - Adults Worsted Weight Wool Yarn
# DURANGO
design by Amy E. Anderson This year, the popular styles on campus are headhugging caps or hats with earflaps. This pattern allows you to make either style. Directions are given for toddler's size with adult size in parentheses. If only one number appears, it applies to both sizes. Materials: Cascade 220 in 3 colors. 175 yds of Color A 60 yds of Color B 40 yds of Color C Needles: Size 5, $16^{\circ}$ circular and dp, or size needed to obtain gauge. Crochet Hook, Size E or F if you are adding earflaps. Gauge: 23 sts $=4^{\mathfrak{n}}$ in stockinette. Finished Dimensions: 17" (22") circumference
Directions:
With $16"$ circular needle and Color A, CO 98 (112) sts. Join, being careful not to twist. Note: I found it helpful to place a marker at the end of each chart repeat, so I could make sure I was on track. Use a different color marker for end of round. Continue knitting even (in Color A) until hat measures $4^{\circ}$ (5") tall. Begin Crown Decreases as follows: $1^{\mathrm{st}}$ Dec Rd: $^{\star}\mathsf{K}6$ DD, ${\mathsf{K}}{\mathsf{5}}^{\star}$ ,rep\*-\* Work one round plain between each Dec Rd. $2^{n\alpha}$ Dec Rd: $^{\star}\mathsf{K}5$ DD, $\mathsf{K}4^{\star}$ rep \*-\*. $3^{r0}$ Dec Rd: $\star\mathsf{K}4$ DD, $\mathsf{K}3^{\star}$ ,rep\* $4^{\mathrm{th}}$ Dec Rd: $^{\star}\mathtt{K}3$ DD $\mathsf{K}2^{\star}$ rep $5^{\mathrm{th}}$ Dec Rd: $^{\star}\mathsf{K}2$ DD, $\mathsf{K}\mathsf{1}^{\star}$ ,rep $6^{\mathrm{th}}$ Dec Rd: $^{\star}\mathsf{K}(\mathsf{I}$ ,,, $\mathsf{D D^{\star}}$ ,rep \*- $7^{\mathrm{th}}$ Dec Rd: \*K2together\*, $\mathsf{r e p}^{\star}-\mathsf{\hat{\Pi}}^{\star}$ At lower edge, starting at the back join, count over 12 (15) sts in one direction and mark this point. Then, count over an additional 20 (22) sts and mark this point. With RS facing and MC, PU 20 (22) sts between your markers. Work earflaps as follows: Purl 1 row. Knit 1 row. Purl 1 row. Then work as follows: RS rows: K1, SSK, knit to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1. WS rows: Purl Continue in this manner until 4 sts remain. Draw together and tie off. Repeat for second earflap.
Finishing:
Weave in ends. Block hat with a steam iron. If you added earflaps to your hat, begin at back join with crochet hook and work 1 row of single crochet around the lower perimeter of the hat. To make ties, cut 3, 36" strands of yarn. Thread these through the bottom tip of the earfliap. With double strands, braid for $12^{\circ}$ or desired length of ties. Tie a knot and snip the ends.
