Sultana Cabled Hat

Cables, cables everywhere! Stretchy and squishy, this warm winter hat is great in DK and light-worsted weight yarns. Finish it off with a big pompom for even more fun.
Materials:
Yarn: Approximately 200 yards DK or light worsted weight yarn. Shown here in Miss Babs Yowza (100% superwash Merino; 560 yds per 8 oz), 1 skein, shown in Fiddlehead. Or 1 skein Miss Babs Kaweah (100% superwash Merino; 280 yds per 4 oz), Miss Babs Kunlun (70% Merino wool, 15% Cashmere, 15% Cultivated Silk; 280 yds per 4.4 oz), or Miss Babs Northumbria DK (100% Bluefaced Leicester; 240 yds per 3.5 oz). Needles: 16" US 4 (3.5mm) circular. 16" US 6 (4mm) circular. US 6 (4mm) double-pointed or size to obtain gauge. Notions: Stitch marker, tapestry needle, two cable needles Size: 19" circumference and 9" tall, to fit a woman's head Gauge: 30 stitches and 34 rows over 4" / 10cm in cable pattern on larger needles. Each pattern repeat measures about 3.75" wide after blocking.

Abbreviations:
Using smaller circular needle, cast on 120 stitches. Being carefu not to twist, join to work in the round and mark beginning of round. Work in k1, p1 ribbing for 12 rounds - hat measures approximately 1.25" / 3cm from cast on edge. Switch to larger circular needle and begin Cable Pattern. Cable Pattern: Each instruction is worked 5 times within each round. Round 1 and all odd rounds: (P2, k4) around. Round 2: (P2, c4L, p2, c4R, [p2, k4] twice) around. Round 4: ([P2, k4] twice, p2, c10L) around. Round 6: Repeat Round 2. Round 8: Repeat Round 1. Round 10: Repeat Round 1. Round 12: ([P2, k4] twice, p2, c4L, p2, c4R) around. Round 14: (P2, c10L, [p2, k4] twice) around. Round 16: Repeat Round 12. Round 18: Repeat Round 1. Round 20: Repeat Round 1. C4L slip 2 stitches to cable needle and hold to front, knit 2 stitches from left needle, knit 2 stitches from cable needle. C4R slip 2 stitches to cable needle and hold to back, knit 2 stitches from left needle, knit 2 stitches from cable needle. C10L slip 4 knit stitches to cable needle and hold to front; slip 2 purl stitches to second cable needle and hold to back; knit 4 stitches from left needle, purl 2 stitches from second cable needle, knit 4 stitches from first cable needle. k knit k2tog knit 2 together. p purl p2tog purl 2 together. ssk slip 2 stitches, one at a time, as if to knit. Insert left needle into the front of these 2 stitches and knit them together from this position. cable decrease slip 4 stitches to cable needle and hold to front, then work k2tog with first stitch on cable needle and first Repeat these 20 rounds for Cable Pattern. Continue, working a total of 2 1/2 repeats, until hat measures approximately 7" / 18cm from cast on edge, ending with Round 10.

Crown of Hat:
Decrease as follows, switching to double-pointed needles when circumference gets too small for the circular needle. Round 1: (P2, k4) around. Round 2: (P2, k3, ssk, k2tog, p2, c4L, p2, c4R) around. 10 stitches decreased. Round 3: (P2, k8, [p2, k4] twice) around. Round 4: (P2, cable decrease, [p2, k4] twice) around. 20 stitches decreased. Round 5: (P2, k4) around. Round 6: (P2, k4, p2, c4L, p2, c4R) around. Round 7: (P2, k4) around. Round 8: (P2, ssk, k2tog, [p2, k4] twice) around. 10 stitches decreased. Round 9: (P2, k2, [p2, k4] twice) around. Round 10: (P2tog, k2tog, p2tog, k4, p2, k4) around. 15 stitches decreased. Round 11: (P3, k4, p2, k4) around. Round 12: (P2tog, p1, k3, ssk, k2tog, k3) around. 15 stitches decreased. Round 13: (P2, k8) around. Round 14: (P2, cable decrease) around. 20 stitches decreased. Round 15: (P2, k4) around. Round 16: (P2, ssk, k2tog) around. 10 stitches decreased. Round 17: (P2, k2) around. Round 18: (P2tog, k2tog) around. 10 stitches decreased - 10 stitches remain.
Finishing:
Draw yarn through remaining 10 stitches twice and then fasten off to inside of hat. Weave in ends and block gently.

Optional: make a big pompom for the top of your hat.
