Escher Seahorse Afghan Based on a Tessallation by M. C. Escher
Pattern by Beverly Simmons in honor of/with help from David Simmons-Duffin Materials: 3 different colors/textures of worsted weight yarn or combined yarns to approximate worsted weight. For example, I used:

Anny Blatt Chimere (Boise) doubled: 7 skeins $=1071$ yards
Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Astrakhan (Natural) 5 skeins $=380$ yards doubled by Debbie Bliss Pure Silk (Ecru) 3 skeins $=41\,1$ yards Jaeger Luxury Tweed (Gray) doubled: 10 skeins $=$ 1950 yards Size 9 $(5.5\ \mathrm{mm})$ or 10 ( $:6\;\mathrm{mm}:$ knitting needles Size H ( $:5\;\mathrm{mm})$ crochet hook
Finished Size: approximately $50^{\prime\prime}\times60^{\prime\prime}$ Instructions: Make 2 strips, each about 56 inches long. Cast on 84 stitches and knit in stockinette stitch, following the graph and repeating the pattern, as necessary. Bind off.The left strp starts with Row 1; the right strip starts with Row 124. Use a weaving stitch to sew the two stripstogether, matching the yarn to the design. Crochet around the edge with the leftover yarn. Note: The graphs on the next pages are made up of one square box representing each stitch. However, knitted stitches are rectangles, not squares. So don't be distressed that the seahorses on the graph look long and skinny; they will knit up just like this: Page 2 has a graph with numbered rows, but you may find it easier to keep track of the rows using the colored graph on Page 3. The lighter squares around the border of the graph are for reference. Page 4 has a graph of the entire width, for those who don't want to make it in two strips.

I am delighted to share this design with other knitters! But I do ask that you email a picture of your finished product to me at fortissimodesign@gmail.com, or post it on ravelry.com and let me know.
