Kooky Kitties Crochet Hat Pattern: Detailed Instructions for Newborn to Adult Sizes

Materials

Yarn: worsted weight yarn in two shades of one color, white, black, contrast color Crochet Hooks: G, I, J Miscellaneous: yarn needle, 2- small black buttons, sewing needle, black thread Gauge: 4" = 13hdc and 9 rounds Sizes: newborn to adult Note: Please look over ENTIRE pattern before beginning. Work in continuous rounds unlessstated. Features for ALL sizes are after base hat section. Help Tip: Rounds start with 8 increases each to form a flatter top, and then switch to 6 increases each starting on round #3.

Directions:

Note: All sizes start the same, and then skip to "body" section when increase round for desired size has been completed. With I hook and darker color yarn, start with a magic circle of 8 sts (or preferred method for starting a circle of 8 sc sts). Place marker to keep track of beginning of round. 1. 2sc in each stitch to end of round. (16sts) 2. \*hdc, 2 hdc in next st\*, repeat to end of round. (24sts) 3. \*hdc 3, 2 hdc in next st\*, repeat to end of round. (30sts) 4. \*hdc 4, 2 hdc in next st\*, repeat to end of round. (36sts) 3-6 mths 5. \*hdc 5, 2 hdc in next st\*, repeat to end of round. (42sts) 6-12 mths 6. \*hdc 6, 2 hdc in next st\*, repeat to end of round. (48sts) 12-24 mths 7. \*hdc 7, 2 hdc in next st\*, repeat to end of round. (54sts) Child/preteen 8. \*hdc 8, 2 hdc in next st\*, repeat to end of round. (60sts) Teen/Adult 9. \*hdc 9, 2 hdc in next st\*, repeat to end of round. (66sts) Large adult Body: Change to J hook. Note: The body combination stitch includes sl sts. Be careful to not pull these sts tight. Tip: When changing colors, drop one color and continue with the other. This eliminates weaving in ends. It is not necessary to join at end of each round. 1. \*sl st in next st, dc in next st\*, repeat to end of round. Change to lighter color. 2. \*sl st in next st, dc in next st\*, repeat to end of round. Change to darker color. Repeat steps 1-2 until hat measures 1”" less than desired length according to size chart at end of pattern. (i.e. if making a child size hat, repeat steps 1-2 until hat measures 7" from starting edge). Change back to I hook. Sc in each st around for 2-5 rounds (baby - adult). Sl st. For regular beanie, finish off and weave in ends. For earflap hat, do NOT finish off. Continue with “earflaps". Earflaps: Start where last round finished. With I hook and darker color yarn, follow directions below accordingtosize: 3-12mths: Ch 2, hdc 10. Ch 2, turn, hdc2tog, hdc in each st until 2sts remain, hdc2tog. Repeat previous row until 2sts remain. Finish off and weave in end. Fold hat in half to find placement for 2nd earflap. It should start directly across from first flap. Starting on RS of hat, attach yarn and follow directions for earflap. 12-24mths: Ch 2, hdc 12. Ch 2, turn, hdc2tog, hdc in each st until 2sts remain, hdc2tog. Repeat previous row until 2sts remain. Finish off and weave in end. Fold hat in half to find placement for 2nd earflap. It should start directly across from first flap. Starting on RS of hat, attach yarn and follow directions for earflap. Child/preteen: Ch 2, hdc 13. Ch 2, turn, hdc2tog, hdc in each st until 2sts remain, hdc2tog. Repeat previous row until 2sts remain. Finish off and weave in end. Fold hat in half to find placement for 2nd earflap. It should start directly across from first flap. Starting on RS of hat, attach yarn and follow directions for earflap. Teen/adult: Ch 2, hdc 14. Ch 2, turn, hdc2tog, hdc in each st until 2sts remain, hdc2tog. Repeat previous row until 2sts remain. Finish off and weave in end. Fold hat in half to find placement for 2nd earflap. It should start directly across from first flap. Starting on RS of hat, attach yarn and follow directions for earflap. Trim: Attach darker color yarn to center back, ch 1, sc in each stitch around, working 2sc in tip of each ear flap. Finish off and weave in ends. Attach braids if desired.

Regular Braids

(Make 2) Cut 12, 20" strands of both light and dark colors from hat. Pull one end of all strands through tip of one earflap. Pull through until even with other end and braid. Wrap a 3" piece of matching yarn around braid approximately 2”" from end. Trim ends. Repeat for other side.

FEATURES

Eyes (make 2): 1. With G hook and white yarn, start with a magic loop of 6sts (or preferred method for starting a circle of 6 sc sts). 2. 2sc in each st to end of round. For smaller sized hats, end here. 3. \*sc, 2sc in next st\*, repeat to end of round. Finish off, leaving a tail for sewing to hat. With yarn needle and yarn tail, sew eyes to hat overlapping solid section at top. Place button on top of each eye and sew in place. Nose: For smaller sized hats, use an F hook if desired. With G hook and bright colored yarn, ch 5, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 3 chs. Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc 2. Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc. Ch 1, turn, sc2tog. Finish off, leaving a tail for sewing to hat. With yarn needle and yarn tail, sew nose in place, overlapping eyes slightly. Mouth: With yarn needle and black yarn, stitch mouth in place. Outer Ears (make 2): Leave long tail in beginning for attaching to hat. With I hook and darker color yarn, ch 9 (ch 7 for smaller sized hats), sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. 1. Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in each st across until 2sts remain, sc2tog. 2. Repeat previous row until no sts remain. 3. Ch 1, sc evenly around ear, with 2sc in each corner st. Finish off, leaving a tail for sewing inner ear in place. Inner Ears (make 2): With G hook and lighter color yarn, ch 9 (ch 7 for smaller sized hats), sc in 2nd ch from hook and in aarh ch arrncc 1. Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in each st across until 2sts remain, sc2tog. 2. Repeat previous row until no sts remain. Finish off and weaveinends. Place one inner ear on top of outer ear. With yarn needle and yarn tail from outer ear, sew pieces together. Repeat for other ear. With yarn tail from outer ear, sew bottom edge of ear to hat. After ear is sewn to hat, flatten bottom center of ear and tack to hat (see photos).

Variation: This hat has a great texture on the inside too! Work increase rounds, then turn hat inside out before working body section. After body section, turn hat inside out again before working sc rounds. This way “right side" of top section and sc rounds will end up on the outside (right side) of the hat when finished.
