A Dragonfly's Garden

designed by Adrienne Fong Beyond a bejeweled wall lies a Dragonfly's Garden. If you look carefully, you may see the dragonflies flitting about here and there! It's magical! Shown in Little Red Bicycle Penny Farthing Sock Dragonfly (380 yds/115 gm)

Pattern illustration

Gauge: 8.5 sts & 12 rows/inch in stockinette Size: Woman's small, medium, large (7, 8, 9 inch ankle)

Materials

115 gm heavy fingering wt yarn (380 yds/115 gm) US Size 1.5/2.5mm knitting needles or needed to knit to gauge (2 sets) waste yarn for provisional cast-on size 8/0 beads: 56 (64, 72) required for cuffs, plus additional for random bead clusters on leg and instep small crochet hook or Oral B Super Flosser for placing beads stitch markers tapestry needle

Notes

When more than one number is given, the first applies to small size, the second to medium, and the last to large. The size of the sock can be adjusted by using a smaller or larger needle for a different gauge. To attach bead using a crochet hook: You will need a small hook that will fit through bead hole: When you reach the stitch for BEAD, slide bead onto shaft of crochet hook. With yarn held in back, slip st off needle and catch with crochet hook. Slide bead onto stitch, slip back onto left hand needle, then knit. The bead is now attached. Beads (in clusters of 3) are randomly placed on the leg and instep. To mirror socks, begin second sock on Row 13 of Chart A.

Abbreviations:

slip - Slip as if to purl, unless otherwise stated. tbl - Through back loop yo - Yarn-over k2tog/p2tog - Knit/Purl 2 stitches together. ssk - Slip 1 stitch as if to knit, slip another stitch as if to knit. Insert left needle through the front loops of the two slipped stitches and knit them together. bead - Place bead OR knit 1. wyif - With yarn in front. kfb - Knit into the front and back of stitch. [ ] - Work group of stitches between brackets for specified number of times.

Instructions

Hemmed Beaded Picot Cuff: Using a provisional cast on with waste yarn, cast on 56 (64, 72) sts. Knit in the round, being careful not to twist the CO edge around the needles. PM to indicate beginning of round. Change to project yarn and work hem as follows: Rounds 1-6: k Round 7 (fold line): \*yo, k2tog; repeat from \* to end of round. Round 8:k Round 9: \*k1, Bead; repeat from \* to end of round. rounds 10-14: k Remove waste yarn and place stitches onto a spare set of needles. Fold at round 7 so purl sides are facing each other (cast-on row is in the back). You will now knit one stitch from working needle and one stitch from the spare needle together. Repeat around. 56 (64,72) sts. Leg: Knit one round even. Work rounds 1-24 of Chart A for a total of 3 times. Chart A is worked twice per round. On last round 24, knit 28 (32, 36) sts in pattern. PM to indicate start of instep, knit 28 (32, 36) sts in pattern. PM to indicate end of instep. Note about Beads: Bead clusters are to be worked randomly on leg and instep, as Heel: Heel flap is worked over 28 (32, 36) sts. Place 28 (32, 36)instep stitches on holder. Heel flap is worked back and forth. Work rows 1- 8 of Chart B once. Repeat rows 5-8 until heel flap measures 2 1/4 to 2 1/2 inches or desired length, ending on row 5 or 7. indicated in chart. Turn heel as follows: Row 1: (WS): slip 1, p16 (18, 20), p2tog, p1, turn. Row 2: slip 1, k7, ssk, k1, turn. Row 3: slip 1, p8, p2tog, p1 turn. Row 4: slip 1, k9, ssk, k1, turn. Continue working one more stitch until all the stitches have been worked. There should be 18 (20, 22) stitches remaining. Do not turn work. Begin gusset. Gusset: Using an extra needle, pick up the "front loop" of each slipped stitch along side of heel. Knit each "picked up" stitch through the back (twisting the stitch) . PM to indicate start of instep. Knit 28 (32, 36) sts in pattern as established (Chart A). PM to indicate end of instep. Using an extra needle, pick up the "front loop" of the same number of stitches along remaining side of heel and knit each "picked up" stitch through the back. Knit 9 (10 (11) stitches and PM to indicate new beginning of the round at center of heel. Round 1 (decrease round): Knit to last 3 stitches before first instep marker, k2tog, k1. Knit 28 (32, 36) instep sts in pattern as established. Slip second marker, k1, ssk, knit to end of round. Round 2: Knit around as established (pattern stitches on instep and stockinette on sole). Repeat these two rounds until 56 (64, 72) sts remain. 28 (32, 36) instep sts/ 28 (32, 36) sole sts. Foot: Knit as established (pattern stitches on instep and stockinette on the sole) until foot measures approximately 3 to 3 1/2 inches less than desired foot length, ending on round 12 or 24 of Chart A. Work rows 1-9 of Chart C once over 28 (32, 36) instep sts; stockinette on sole. Then work rows 8-9 only on instep, stockinette on sole until foot measures approximately 1 1/2 (1 3/4, 2) inches less than desired foot length.

Toe:

Decrease Round: Knit to last 3 stitches before first instep marker, k2tog, k1. Slip marker, k1, ssk, work instep stitches in pattern as established to last 3 stitches before second instep marker, k2tog, k1. Slip marker, k1, ssk, knit to end. Work decrease round once, knit 3 rounds in pattern as established. [work decrease round once, knit 2 rounds in pattern as established] twice. [work decrease round once, knit 1 round in pattern as established] 3 times. Work decrease round only until 20 sts remain. Use Kitchener stitch to close toe.
