Directions
Step 1:
Cast on 18 stitches. Use whatever cast on technique you are comfortable with. Knit 4 rows of seed stitch as follows: Row 1: (k1, p1) to end of row Row 2: (p1, k1) to end of row Row 3: Repeat row 1 Row 4: Repeat row 2
Step 2:
You have just finished 4 rows of seed stitch. As from now the outer 2 stitches on either side of your cowl will continue in seed stitch. All stitches in between will be done in a variation seed stitch. Row 5 (RS): k1, p1, knit to last 2 stitches, k1, p1 Row 6 (WS): p1, k1, (k1, p1) to last 2 stitches, pl, k1 Row 7: k1, p1, knit to last 2 stitches, k1, p1 Row 8: p1, k1, (p1, k1) to last 2 stitches, p1, k1 Repeat row 5 to 8 until you have approximately an 8o" tail of yarn left
Step 3:
Bind off all stitches. You should now have approximately a 4o" tail. Cut that tail in half. Untwist the 2o" piece of yarn you just cut off. You will have 3 strands of yarn which you will use to attach the buttons after you have wet blocked your cowl.

Step 4:
You are now going to wet block your cowl. This is an essential part, so please do not skip. Also note that you must handle your knitted piece gently and with care when you wet block! Before wet blocking, weave in all ends of your cowl. Soak your cowl completely in cool water for about 20 minutes with a bit of Eucalan or hair conditioner. Rinse very gently and squeeze (do not wring!) out all excess water. Lay your cowl fat onto a towel and roll it completely into the towel. Walk over the towel with your full weight. This way excess water will be soaked into the towel. Repeat if necessary. Lay your cowl fat on a towel to dry overnight, making sure you have the following dimensions: Length: approximately 17"-18" Width: approximately 9"
Step 5:
Because you wet blocked your cowl, it should look tidy and stitches have relaxed out. Both sides of your cowl have a distinguished lok: one side has the majority of knit stitches, and the other side has the majority of purl bumps coming up. It is up to you which side you want to use to show off. To complete your cowl, attach your buttons evenly spaced at the cast off side. You did not have to make buttonholes because the space in between the stitches should be big enough to push your buttons through.
Step 6:
All done! Enjoy!
