This hat pattern is written using US crochet terminology.

Description

This is a unisex adult hat but can easily be altered for different sized heads. The hat has the appearance of two spiralling colors of different widths using three yarns in two colors. You could use three different colors, then the width of each stripe will be the same as each other. Skill level - intermediate

Supplies

4.5mm crochet hook. Suggested yarn - approximately half a skein of Caron Simply Soft in black and approximately one skein of a contrasting color of Caron Simply Soft. Many similar weight yarns will also be suitable. Scissors. Yarn needle. Three stitch markers. N.B. for a couple of technical reasons, it is suggested you use two separate skeins instead of both ends of one skein for colors “B" and “C".

Gauge

Suggested stitches for swatch: fpdc and bpdc stitches. 13 rows in 4 inches 19 stitches in 4 inches The diameter of first 8 rounds - approx. 5.5 inches Hat height 8 inches

Directions

The instructions refer to “color A", “color B" and “color C". Assign the black to “color A". Where the instructions say “remove hook" - either attach a stitch marker into the loop or enlarge the loop enough so the stitch doesn't undo itself when working on the other colors. The first two or three rounds will be a little awkward working with three yarns, just because of the number of strands attached to thework.

Pattern illustration

Using color A: chain 4 then slipstitch into the first chain making a circle. It is suggested you hide all the loose ends in the stitches as you work around the circle in round one, but can be hidden later. There are some close up pictures on last page of the first couple of rounds. Round 1 - Still with color A - ch3, 3 dc into the ring. Remove hook. Using color B - ch3, 3 dc into the ring. Remove hook. Using color C - ch3, 3 dc into the ring. Remove hook. Total of 12 stitches.

Round 2

Place hook into loop of color A, sl st into the top of the ch3 of color B, ch1, 2 fpdc in the ch3 of color B, 2 fpdc in each dc of color B of the previous round. Remove hook. Place the hook into loop of color B, sl st into the top of the ch3 of color C, ch1, 2 fpdc in the ch3 of color C, 2 fpdc in each dc of color C of the previous round. Remove hook. Place the hook into loop of color C, sl st into the top of the ch3 of color A, ch1, 2 fpdc in the ch3 of color A, 2 fpdc in each dc of color A of the previous round. Remove hook. of 24 stitches (ch1 at the beginning of each color is not counted as a stitch)

Round 3

Place hook into loop of color A, bpdc in the first stitch of color B (start the bpdc by going between the ch1 and the fpdc), 2 fpdc in the second stitch, \* bpdc in the next stitch, 2 fpdc into the next stitch. Repeat from \* 3 times. Remove hook. Place hook into loop of color B, bpdc in the first stitch of color C (start the bpdc by going between the ch1 and the fpdc), 2 fpdc in the second stitch, \* bpdc in the next stitch, 2 fpdc into the next stitch. Repeat from \* 3 times. Remove hook. Place hook into loop of color C, bpdc in the first stitch of color A (start the bpdc by going between the ch1 and the fpdc), 2 fpdc in the second stitch, \* bpdc in the next stitch, 2 fpdc into the next stitch. Repeat from \* 3 times. Remove hook. Total of 36 stitches.

Round 4

Place hook into loop of color A, \* bpdc in the first stitch of color B, fpdc in the next stitch, bpdc in the next stitch, fpdc in the same stitch. Repeat from \* 4 times. Remove hook. Place hook into loop of color B, \* bpdc in the first stitch of color C, fpdc in the next stitch, bpdc in the next stitch, fpdc in the same stitch. Repeat from \* 4 times. Remove hook. Place hook into loop of color C, \* bpdc in the first stitch of color A, fpdc in the next stitch, bpdc in the next stitch, fpdc in the same stitch. Repeat from \* 4 times. Remove hook. Total of 48 stitches.

Round 5

Place hook into loop of color A, \* bpdc in the first stitch of color B, fpdc in the next stitch, bpdc in the next stitch, fpdc in the next stitch, fpdc in the same stitch. Repeat from \* 4 times. Remove hook. Place hook into loop of color B, \* bpdc in the first stitch of color C, fpdc in the next stitch, bpdc in the next stitch, fpdc in the next stitch, fpdc in the same stitch. Repeat from \* 4 times. Remove hook. Place hook into loop of color C, \* bpdc in the first stitch of color A, fpdc in the next stitch, bpdc in the next stitch, fpdc in the next stitch, fpdc in the same stitch. Repeat from \* 4 times. Remove hook. Total of 60 stitches.

Round 6

Place hook into loop of color A, \*bpdc in the first stitch of color B, fpdc in the next stitch, bpdc in the next stitch, fpdc in the next stitch, bpdc in the next stitch, fpdc in the same stitch. Repeat from \* 4 times. Remove hook. Place hook into loop of color B, \* bpdc in the first stitch of color C, fpdc in the next stitch, bpdc in the next stitch, fpdc in the next stitch, bpdc in the next stitch, fpdc in the same stitch. Repeat from \* 4 times. Remove hook. Repeat from \* 4 times. Remove hook. Total of 72 stitches.

Round 7

Place hook into loop of color A, \* bpdc in the first stitch of color B, fpdc in the next stitch, bpdc in the next stitch, fpdc in the next stitch, bpdc in the next stitch, fpdc in the next stitch, fpdc in the same stitch. Repeat from \* 4 times. Remove hook. Place hook into loop of color B, \* bpdc in the first stitch of color C, fpdc in the next stitch, bpdc in the next stitch, fpdc in the next stitch, bpdc in the next stitch, fpdc in the next stitch, fpdc in the same stitch. Repeat from \* 4 times. Remove hook. Place hook into loop of color A, \* bpdc in the first stitch of color B, fpdc in the next stitch. Repeat from \* 16 times. Remove hook. Place hook into loop of color B, \* bpdc in the first stitch of color C, fpdc in the next stitch. Repeat from \* 16 times. Remove hook. Place hook into loop of color C, \* bpdc in the first stitch of color A, fpdc in the next stitch. Repeat from \* 16 times. Remove hook. Total of 96 stitches. Rounds 10 to 24 Repeat round 9. Total of 96 stitches per round.

Round 25

Place hook into loop of color A, 1 bphdc in the next stitch, 31 sc stitches. Remove hook. Place hook into loop of color B, 1 bphdc in the first stitch of color C, 31 sc stitches. Remove hook. Place hook into loop of color C, 1 bphdc in the first stitch of color A, 31 stitches. Remove hook. Total of 96 stitches.

Round 26

Color A, color B and color C all now need to be the same color - so change your black (color A) to the same as the others. Place hook into loop of color A, 32 sc stitches. Remove hook. Place hook into loop of color B, 32 sc stitches. Remove hook. Place hook into loop of color C, 32 sc stitches. Remove hook. Total of 96 stitches.

Round 27

Repeat round 26.

Finishing off suggestion

Pattern illustration

For each of three colors, pull up a long loop and cut at the top of the loop. With a yarn needle, go under the loop of the next stitch (as if you were going to do a sc stitch) then thread the end back down the top of the last sc stitch and weave in your loose ends on the “wrong" side of the hat. This makes a neat uniform look to the edge of your work.
