CHRISTMAS STOCKINGS
Lorraine Ehrlinger Skill Level: Intermediate This pattern presumes that you know how to knit socks. Basic sock instructions are not included. You may use whatever heel and toe you prefer. I give specific instructions for the fancy part. These stockings are part of a series, designed to be added to as necessary. They all follow the same basic pattern, but no two are alike. The girls stockings have designs/pictures on the leg and plain feet. The boys stockings have a stripe pattern which goes down onto the foot. I show several examples, but give no information< on duplicating them.You can do what ever you like with yours. I have used duplicate stitch, 2oK 3 color patterns, and fairisle forthe designs. These three stockings are knit in fairisle. The colors alternate within a branch 6f the family, red, green, red, green, The cufs are white. The lettering is green. The((C hanging loop matches the mai color of the stocking.

Needles: US #5 double pont, &rochet hook G, or size to match yarn. Gauge:文 sts./inch Yarn: Some combination dfwhite for cuffs and red, green, and white for the body. Total amount ofyarn is about 4 ounces. I used Plymouth Encore - $75\%$ acrylic, $25\%$ wool,100g $3\%$ oz)200yds Cuff cast on: I used a provisional cast on. With smooth crochet cotton and a large hook, make a chain of about 70 stitches. Cut yarn. Pick up 64 stitches with white and join without twisting! Knit 14 rows. Next row, k2 tog, yarn over (yo), repeating to end of row. Knit 15 rows. Knit 1 row, combining stitches from cast on, 1 on 1 with this row. Knit stitches on both rows together. There will be one stitch more on the needles than on the cast on. Remove the crochet cotton. Knit a row of k2 tog, yo. Body of stocking: Start main color. Leg is 44 rows or about $6\,\%$ inches, depending on the pattern. Colors for patterned stocking. Main Color, 8 rows, White, 2 rows. Main Color with pattern, 30 rows. White 2 rows. Main Color 2 rows. On the next row, Foot is 3 inches stockinette stitch after gusset decreases. Toe is decreased until 16 stitches remain ahd grafted with Kitchener Stitch. The toe)decrease Nused: Needle #1, work to tast 3 stitches, k2tog, k1. Needle #2, )k1, ssk, work to end of needle. Needle #3 work as needle #1. Needle #4 work as needle #2. K one round. Alternate decrease rounds and knit rounds until there are 4 sts on each needle. Graft toe. Lettering is duplicate stitched 10 stitches high and 3-4 stitches wide. Start at the center and work to the sides so the name is centered.
