Yarns and Yardages

Yarn: approx 10 yds of anything bulky weight (great for sumptuous art yarns). Needles: Finished measurements are for bulky yarn/Us #15 needle. Gauge approx 2 %2 sts per inch. Thinner yarns can be knit on smaller needles and will make a smaller flower. Finished Measurements Assembled Rose is 5" in diameter. @ Lynne Vogel 2010 Abbreviations M1 = make one by casting on with backward loop cast on.

Cast on 12 sts.

Leave a tail of at least 8 inches so that you can sew the base of the rose when you are done. Try to have this be the thinner or smoother part of the yarn..it's easier to sew with. Row l: Knit. Row 2: [p1, m1] to last st, p1. (23 sts) Row 3: Knit Row 4: [p1, m1] to last st, p1. (55 sts) Rows 5 & 7: Knit Rows 6 & 8: Purl Row 9: Bind Off With cast on row serving as the base of the rose, with right side facing, coil the fabric in a spiral so that it resembles a rose. Fabric will curl automatically to show purl side along edge of rose. Use yarn tail to sew spiral in place. You can even use a felting needle to anchor and shape your rose. Just poke where you want the fabric to stick together. Easy! Sew rose to pin or button or attach with shawl stickpin for easy removal, or sew directly onto headband, scarf, bag, whatever. wear with attitude.

A Word on Gauge and Needle Size: What if your yarn is too fine to knit on Us 15 needles? Say it's more of a worsted size but you still want a big, big flower. Choose a smaller needle size that works well with your yarn. For art yarns with lots of thick and thin places you'll want needles a size or two larger than you'd use for smooth yarn. Now, cast on more stitches. Start with 20 if you're knitting on US 8. Follow the instructions for increasing on rows 2 and 4, then perhaps knit 10 rows in all instead of 8 before you bind off. You'll need more yardage...allow 15 yards. If your yarn is really fine, you might want to double strand it with itself or another yarn. Great effects can be had this way. Remember to double your yarn allowance when you double strand. Imagination rules! @ Lynne Vogel 2010
