NOTES
This skirt is knit in the round beginning from the top of the skirt. Every row will be knit from the RS, except the bottom edging which will be turned in short rows. The very first part of the skirt is a small flap, which will be folded inward over the elastic band and sewed into place at the end. The body of the skirt is basically paneled, with the chart depicting one panel. The edging is knit in short rows, without any fancy turning technique; just turn the work around and work each leaf tip as if it were a mini piece. After the leaf tip is completed, sts are picked up along one edge and bound off loosely. Pom-poms are made at the end and attached with extra yarn. Two balls of Lorna's Laces should be exactly enough for the skirt, pom-poms, and sewing the elastic band in across the top.
A note about the chart:
Do not pick up stitches as you are knitting across the rows of the leaf tip at the edging! These are to indicate where to pick up stitches after you reach the tip, and only have one stitch left from the short rows. Then, pick up a stitch where indicated along the edge of the leaf, slip the two stitches back onto your left needle, and SSK to loosely bind off. Then, pickup anotherstitchfurtherdownthesideofthe leaf, slip the 2 sts back onto your left needle, and SSK to loosely bind off. Repeat until you reach the purls along the base of the leaf.Continue to bind off purlwise 5 sts until you reach the base of the next leaf, and begin short rows again.

LEAF PATTERN:
DIRECTIONS
Repeat directions between \* and \*. Each repeat between the \*s corresponds to one panel of the skirt. The number of sts cast on in this pattern corresponds to a skirt with 7 panels, so each section will be repeated 7 times before you come back to the beginning of the round. If you'd like a smaller or larger skirt, cast on a different multiple of 16 sts, and follow the pattern. To make it easier to follow, each stitch that is at the center of a leaf is marked in bold (k1). Directions given between [] should be repeated the number of times indicated eg. [k2, p2] x2 = k2, p2, k2, p2 St counting = (#/panel, # total) Cast on 112 sts on circular needles and join ends in a circle. Place stitch marker at beginning of the row. Place st marker between each panel that's a different color from the one indicating the start of the row. EDGING AND BINDING OFF:
This is where we start the short rows. Take out the panel stitch markers and set two aside. Start by binding off purl-wise 2 sts. Place marker. Row 1: ssk, k9, k2tog Place marker. We're just going to work the stitches back and forth between these two markers. Turn work around to knit on wrong side. Row 2 (Ws): purl back to 1st marker (11 sts) and turn work around Row 3 (RS): ssk, k7, k2tog, turn work Row 4 (ws): purl to marker (9 sts), turn Row 5 (RS): ssk, k5, k2tog, turn Row 6 (wS): purl to marker (7 sts), turn Row 7 (RS): ssk, k3, k2tog, turn Row 8 (ws): purl to marker (5 sts), turn Row 9 (RS): ssk, k1, k2tog, turn Row 10 (ws): purl to marker (3 sts), turn Row 11 (RS): sk2p There should be one stitch left from your short row. On the side of the leaf away from both markers, pick up the closest stitch and knit it. Slip that stitch and the one left-over stitch from the short rows onto your left needle and ssk them together. Repeat this process 4 more times until you reach the base of the leaf. Bind of purl-wise 5 stitches, and repeat short rows 1-11. Alternate binding off 5 purl-wise stitches between leaves and working the short rows 1-11 until you reach the beginning of the round. Tie off, and weave in ends. Sew in elastic band at top of skirt. Make small pom-poms by wrapping extra yarn 25 times around the tines of a kitchen fork. Cut the thread and cut off another piece of thread about 6" long. Thread the 6" piece between the tines at the center of the fork and tie the wrapped yarn in the middle. Remove from fork and cut the wraps. Trim and attach pom-poms at the tip of every leaf. Block and enjoy! (Google search “how to make a pom-pom using a fork" and it'll give you picture instructions!)
