The pattern uses US terminology. You'll be working in a spiral from the bottom upwards. There are no slip stitches at the end of rounds or "chaining up" anywhere. To start, make the magic circle or ch4 and sl st into first chain.
Round 1
1 sc, 11 hdc. Total 12 stitches. Visit me on Facebook & YouTube Search for "24 Carat Crochet"
Round 2
dc into the sc, 2 hdc into each of the remaining stitches. Total of 24 stitche
Round 3
\* hdc in first stitch, 2 hdc in second stitch. Repeat from \* 12 times. Total of 36 stitches.
Round 4 to 36
\* hdc in every stitch. Total of 36 stitches in each round. Add or remove rounds if you wish to make a taller or shorter cover. Finish off with a single crochet stitch and a slip stitch to create a smoother slope at the top of the wine bottle cover.
ICORD AND BUTTONS
If you have an icord maker, create an icord approximately 24" long using the lighter weight black yarn. Alternatively, use about a size 4mm crochet hook (H) to make a length of chain stitches approximately 24" long using the black yarn. A longer cord would be fine but don't go too much shorter to ensure you have enough to tie a bow. Place the cover on a wine bottle before threading the cord through the stitches to help guide where to place the cord. There is no obvious back or front of the wine bottle cover, but you could use the final stitch at the top as a guide to where the “back" is. Starting at the back, weave the ends in and out of the stitches and finishing with both ends at the front. A crochet hook is ideal to help you thread the cord through the stitches. Suggested gaps - cord showing on the outside of four stitches and behind (inside) three stitches. This will give you some nice exposed black colour contrast around the neck area of the bottle against the bright orange colour of the cover. You will have a gap of approximately six stitches at the front between the loose ends. You will notice that the loose ends are off-set by one round but this will not be visible when the bow is made. Pull the loose ends together to tighten the cover slightly around the neck of the bottle and tie a bow. You may find it sits more symmetrically tied in a particular way, you may need to experiment. Sew your Halloween buttons equally spaced around the top of the wine bottle cover and halfway between the top of the cover and the cord. Try not to drink the wine yourself; the idea is, the bottle of wine plus your wonderful new cover are a gift to someone else!
