Design by Amy Klimt Undulating cables sprout from the ribbing and disappear harmoniously into the crown shaping of this unisex design. Merino yarn makes this the ultimate warm and comfortable winter hat! Skill Level: Intermediate. Size: To fit $20"$ to $23"$ head- adult M/L Finished measurements: $7.5"$ across (unstretched) , $8"$ tall. This length will cover the tops of the ears on a person with a $22"$ to $23"$ head. Yarn: Mission Falls 1824 Wool ( $100\%$ superwash Merino wool; 85 yards [78 meters]/50g): 15 Putty, 3 balls. Needles: Size US 8 needles $(5\mathrm{mm})$ , or size needed to get gauge. $16"$ circular and dpns. Size US 6 needles $(4\mathrm{mm})$ , or 2 sizes smaller than size needed to get gauge. One $16"$ circular. Notions: Cable needle; stitch marker; tapestry needle.

Gauge: 18 sts and 24 rows to $4"$ in stockinette st on larger needles. 33 sts to $4^{\circ}$ in cable pattern (unstretched). Abbreviations: CO: Cast on K: Knit P: Purl CN: Cable needle St: Stitch Rep: Repeat Rnd: Round C6R: Slip 3 sts to CN, hold in back of work. K3, then k3 off CN. C6L: Slip 3 sts to CN, hold in front of work. K3, then k3 off CN. K2tog: Knit 2 together. SSK: Slip 2 stitches knitwise individually, then knit these 2 sts together through back loop. C4R: Slip 2 sts to CN, hold in back of work. K2, then k2 off CN. C4L: Slip 2 sts to CN, hold in front of work. K2, then k2 off CN. C2R: Slip 1 st to CN, hold in back of work. K1, then k1 off CN. C2L: Slip 1 st to CN, hold in front of work. K1, then k1 off CN.
Cable Pattern
Rnd 1 (and every following odd rnd): (P1, k6) around. Rnd 2: As for Rnd 1. Rnd 4: (P1, C6R, p1, C6L) around. Rnds 6 and 8: As for Rnd 1. Rnd 10: (P1, C6L, p1, C6R) around. Rnd 12: As for Rnd 1.
Crown Decrease Pattern
Rnd 1: (P1, k1, SSK, k3, p1, k3, K2tog, k1) around. Rnd 2: (P1, k5) around. Rnd 3: (P1, k2, K2tog, k1, p1, k1, SSK, k2) around. Rnd 4: (P1, C4R, p1, C4L) around. Rnd 5: (P1, k2, K2tog, p1, SSK, k2) around. Rnd 6: (P1, k3) around. Rnd 7: (P1, SSK, k1, p1, k1, K2tog) around. Rnd 8: (P1, C2L, p1, C2R) around. Rnd 9: (P1, K2tog, p1, SSK) around. Rnd 10: (P1, k1) around. Rnd 11: (K2tog) around. Hat: CO 126 sts on smaller needles, using long tail cast on method. Place marker and join in the round, being careful not to twist. Rnd 1: (P1, k2, p2, k2) around. Rep Rnd 1 for $1.25"$ or desired length of ribbing.

Change to larger needles. Work 12 rnds of cable pattern 3 times. The work should measure about $6.25"$ from cast on edge. Crown Shaping: Work 11-round decrease chart once, switching to dpns when necessary. Repeat round 11 until 9 sts remain. Break yarn, thread onto a tapestry needle, and pass yarn through live stitches twice. Remove any remaining needles and pull yarn to cinch top of hat closed. Finishing: Weave in ends. Block if desired, but you may want to leave the hat in its unblocked, unstretched state if the recipient's head size is on the smaller end of the size range.
