Lorraine Berger 2012

Size: child, S, M/L, XL. All instructions are given for size small. Please adjust for the size you're making. Materials: \~ 50g sock weight yarn in main color (MC), and scraps of contrasting color (CC) sock weight yarn (about 30-50 yds worth). 2 circulars or 5 dpns, 2.25 mm (US1), 2.5mm (US 1.5) Gauge: on US 1.5 in plain stockinette, 28sts X 36 rows = 10cm/4in Cast on: Child: 50 sts Small: 58 sts Med/Large: 64 sts XL: 68 sts If you're doing the child or XL, please see original pattern for the serpentine panel and the number of stitches needed in those panels. The panel size for small and med/large are the same number of stitches. Pattern is written for 2 circulars. Remember, instructions are for size small only, refer to original pattern when the number of stitches matter for your size. For both Left- and Right-hand mitt: Cast on 58 stitches with main color. Join and knit 8 rounds. Join contrasting color and purl 4 rounds. Knit 1 round in contrasting color. Knit 14 rounds in main color (about 1.5 inches) Now here's where it gets a little tricky. You will be starting the center panel with the CC serpentine on one side of the mitt, and also at the same time, doing the thumb gusset on the other side. Pay attention to which handed mitt you are doing so that the thumb gusset is on the correct side, AND the serpentine is going in the direction you want. Notice in the picture that it is the right-handed mitt and the serpentine starts at the bottom AwAY from the thumb. In order to have matching mitts, you must reverse the direction of the serpentine on the other hand AND have the thumb gusset on the other side! Sounds confusing now, but once you're done with the first one, you'll understand what that means and how to do it as well. Right-hand mitt: Next round (assuming you have 29 sts for the back of the hand): In MC still, k10 Join CC and k2 (CC) In MC, p10, k7. Now you are on the palm side of the mitt and you need to start the thumb gusset. K2, place marker (PM), make 1 st (M1), k1, M1, PM, k26. Now you are ready to begin the pattern in earnest! Here are some abbreviations you'll need to know: RndX - round number NX- needle, either N1 for the panel side of the mitt, or N2 for the palm/thumb side of the mitt C2F - slip the 2 CC stitches onto a cable needle and hold in front of work, purl 1(MC), k2 from cable needle C2B - slip 1 MC st onto cable needle and hold behind work, knit the 2 CC sts, purl 1 from the cable needle.
