The scoop: This feminine little sweater is sure to please the knitter and the wearer. The lace trim on the collar, border, and sleeve edges give it a fun look and a challenge for the knitter. Sizes are up to 6 months and up to 12 months or chest sizes $16~\frac{1}{2}$ inches and 22 inches. Materials needed: Yarn:2 skeins of Cascade Sierra Quatro $80\%$ pima cotton/ $20\%$ wool or similar (approx. 384 yds) one small button for closure, needles needed to obtain the gauge (size 5-7 depending on gauge), plus needles that are one to two sizes larger than that for neckline, stitch holders, blunt tapestry needle for weaving in ends. Gauge: Gauge is important with this project. You will want to work a gauge swatch in stockinette stitch preferably over a $4\!\times\!4$ square. For this project you will want a gauge of 4 stitches per inch. (This gauge is different than what is on the label but it works!) If your gauge is tight go up a needle size, if it is too loose go down a needle size. Instructions: Sizes are up to 6 months ( up to 12 months) or chest sizes $16~\frac{1}{2}$ inches and 22 inches. Follow the same instructions for the front and the back. Cast on 33, (44) stitches and leave a tail for seaming. Purl one row, this is your set up row and will be the wrong side. The next row is the first row of the Arbor Lace pattern which has 10 rows in all. Arbor Lace Pattern (10 Rows) Row 1: RS \*SK, K3tbl, yO, K1, yO, K3tbl, K2tog: rep from \* to the end. Row 2, 4, 6, and 8: Purl. Row 3: Rs: \*ssK, K2tbl, yO, K1, yO, ssK, yo, K2tbl, K2tog. Row 5: Rs: \*SSK, K1tbl, yO, K1, (YO, SSK) twice, YO, K1tbl, K2tog: rep from \* the end. Row 10: $\star{\mathsf{p}}_{1}$ , K1, P7, K1, P1: rep from the \* to the end. Repeat rows 9 and 10 for the body of the sweater and knit in the pattern until your piece measures 6 $\frac{1}{2}$ . (7) inches. Bind off 2, (3) stitches on the next two rows for 29, (38) stitches. Bind off 1 stitch on the next two rows for 27, (36) stitches. Work in pattern until arm hole measures about $3\ \frac{1}{2}$ (4) inches. Place all stitches on holder and leave a long tail for the 3 needle bind off later. Cut yarn. Make a second piece to match. With right sides together do a three needle bind off on one of the shoulders over 7 stitches. Place the remaining stitches on holders. SLEEVEs: Cast on 22 stitches, purl one row, then work Arbor Lace pattern Rows 1-10. Row 11: (Increase round) $\star\mathsf{K}1$ , K1f&b, repeat from \* all the way across, you should end up with 33 stitches. Row 12: Purl Row 13: Knit Row 14: Purl Row 15: K1, K1f&b, K across to last 2 stitches, K1f&b, K1. You will have 35 stitches. Continue in stockinette stitch until sleeve measures 7, (8) in. and bind off all stitches. Make a second sleeve to match. Seam front and back together up to the armhole. Seam the sleeves around the armhole and then seam down the armhole. COLLAR: You will use the needles that you used for the body, leaving a long tail (which you will use later to make a buttonhole loop with) and with the right side of the sweater facing you, pick up the stitches on the stitch holders and any number of stitches around the neck that is a multiple of 11, start with 44, 55, or 66 depending on how large your opening is looking. You will want to work this collar very loosely, so it is best to start with more stitches than you think you need and definitely work with larger needles after Row 4. You may have to use double pointed needles, but circular will work if you have enough stitches. You will not join the stitches, since the collar is not worked in the round. Row 1: RS Knit one row, this will be your RS row even though the WS is facing you. Row 2: WS Purl. Row 3: RS Knit this row, but increase 11 more stitches evenly across the row. Row 4: Purl. \*\*cChange to larger sized needles and begin the Arbor Lace pattern starting with Row 7 and working backwards to end with Row 3. Row 5: Knit Row 7 of Arbor Lace. Row 6: Purl. Row 7: Knit Row 5 of Arbor Lace. Row 8: Purl. Row 9: Knit Row 3 of Arbor Lace. Row 10: Bind off loosely in Purl. Take your button and attach at the open shoulder, opposite the side where you have your long tail. With the long tail crochet any number of chain stitches to form a loop a little smaller than your button. Attach the loop with leftover tail. Weave in all your ends.
