Frankie's Knitted Stuff

This pattern is for clothes to fit my Penny Plain doll. For everyday wear she has a choice of skirts and either a cardigan or a long jacket. She also has a set of underwear, as well as shoes to match her skirts. Throughout this pattern it is important to knit to the right tension or the clothes will not fit.
Underwear
This consists of knickers and a button up vest. Both were knitted with My first Regia (105 m / 25g) on 2.75 mm / US size 2 needles, working to a tension of 16 stitches and 22 rows to 5 cm / 2"2 in stocking stitch. I used shades 1813 (blue), 1809 (white), 1811 (pink) and 1810 (pale pink). You will need about 5g of yarn for the knickers and 10g for the vest.

Knickers
Using the long tail method cast on 24 stitches. Knit two rows. Now work 18 rows in stocking stitch. Cast off nine stitches at the start of the next two rows, slipping the first stitch, knitwise on the knit row and purlwise on the purl (6 sts). Work four rows in stocking stitch. Cast on nine stitches at the start of the next two rows (24 sts). Work 18 more rows in stocking stitch. Knit three rows and cast off knitwise. With the right side facing and 4 mm / US size 6 needles, pick up and knit 24 stitches round the leg opening. Cast off knitwise. Repeat for the other leg. Join the side seams and tighten the waist with shirring elastic. To do this, sew tiny stitches with the elastic immediately below the garter stitch waist. Adjust to fit and then knot the elastic in two flat knots inside the back of the waist before trimming the ends.
Back
Using the long tail method cast on 25 stitches. Work four rows in moss stitch: Every row: K1, \*P1, K1, repeat from \* to end. Now work 24 rows in stocking stitch. Cast off two stitches at the start of the next two rows (21 sts). Work six more rows in stocking stitch. Work eight rows in stocking stitch on the first six stitches only for the right shoulder. Cast off. Re-join the yarn to the remaining 15 stitches, cast off 9 and knit to the end (6 sts). Work seven rows in stocking stitch, beginning with a purl row, for the left shoulder. Cast off.
Left Front
Using the long tail method cast on 13 stitches. Work four rows in moss stitch. Work 24 rows in the following two row pattern: Row 1: Knit. Row 2: K3, P10. Next row: Cast off 2, K to end (11 sts). Next row: Cast off 5, P to end (6 sts). Work 14 rows in stocking stitch. Cast off.
Right Front
Using the long tail method cast on 13 stitches. Work four rows in moss stitch. Make the first buttonhole: Next row: K2, yf, K2tog, K to end. Next row: P10, K3. Work the following two rows four times: Next row: Knit. Next row: P10, K3. Repeat from ? once more. Next row: K2, yf, K2tog, K to end. Next row: P10, K3. Next row: Knit. Next row: P10, K3. Your buttonhole band should be 24 rows long and there should be threebuttonholes. Next row: Cast off 5, K to end (8 sts). Next row: Cast off 2, P to end (6 sts). Work 14 rows in stocking stitch and cast off. Join the two fronts to the back at the shoulders. Armhole edging With the right side facing and using 4 mm needles, pick up and knit 24 stitches round each armhole. Cast off knitwise. Neck edging With the right side facing and using 4 mm needles, pick up and knit six stitches across the top of the right front and nine stitches up the side. Then pick up six stitches down the side of the back, nine across it and six up the other side. Finally pick up nine stitches down the side of the left front and six across the top. That will give you 51 stitches. After all that, cast off knitwise. Join the side seams and add three small buttons to fasten the vest.
Pleated Skirt
This was knitted with Sirdar Country Style 4 ply (226 m / 50g) and 3 mm / US size 21%2 needles, working to a tension of 14 stitches and 20 rows to 5 cm / 2"2 in stocking stitch. I used about 15g of shade 616 and the skirt is 11 cm / 414" long.

Using the long tail method cast on 80 stitches. Knit one row. Work in the following two row rib pattern for 20 rows: Row 1: \*K3, P2, repeat from \* to end. Row 2: \*K2, P3, repeat from \* to end. Now the rib needs to be relaxed a little. Work 10 rows in the following pattern (you'll need to concentrate for this bit): Row 1: \*K1, P1, K1, P2, repeat from \* to end. Row 2: \*K2, P1, K1, P1, repeat from \* to end. Purl one row. Next row: \*K2, K2tog, repeat from \* to end (60 sts). Now work ten rows in stocking stitch, beginning with a purl row. Knit two rows for the waist and cast off knitwise. Join the back seam and add shirring elastic just below the waist.
Jacket
This is a long jacket, about 13 cm / 5" from shoulder to hem and features a slip stitch pattern at the bottom of the body and sleeves.

It is knitted with Sirdar Country Style 4 ply (226 m / 50g) and 3 mm / US size 2/2 needles, working to a tension of 14 stitches and 20 rows to 5 cm / 2"2 in stocking stitch. I used about 20g of shade 388 with a small amount of shade 616 for the dotty pattern.
Back
Using the cable method and the main colour, cast on 31 stitches. Work four rows in moss stitch: Every row: K1, \*P1, K1, repeat from \* to end. Purl one row. Now for the dotty pattern. There are six rows of this, M is the main colour and C is the contrast.

Row 1: C Knit. Row 2: C Purl. Row 3: M K1, \*sl 1 pwise wyib, K1, repeat from \* to end. Row 4: M K1, \*sl 1 pwise wyif, K1, repeat from \* to end. Row 5: C Knit. Row 6: C P1, \*sl 1 pwise wyif, P1, repeat from \* to end. That last row reduces the height of the dark stripe above the dots to match that below them. Work 24 rows in stocking stitch. Cast off five stitches at the start of the next two rows (21 sts). Now work 12 more rows in stocking stitch. Work four rows on the first five stitches only for the right shoulder. Cast off. Re-join the yarn to the remaining 16 stitches and cast off 11, slipping the first stitch knitwise, knit to the end (5 sts). Work three rows on these five stitches for the left shoulder, beginning with a purl row. Cast off.
Left Front
Using the cable method cast on 15 stitches. Work four rows in moss stitch. Purl one row. Work the six row dotty pattern as before. Now work 24 rows in stocking stitch. Next row: Cast off 5, K to end (10 sts). Work 10 rows in stocking stitch, beginning with a purl row. Next row: Cast off 5, P to end (5 sts). Work four rows in stocking stitch. Cast off. Right Front Work in the same way as the left front until you have finished the dotty pattern. Now work 25 rows in stocking stitch. Next row: Cast off 5, P to end (10 sts). Work 10 rows in stocking stitch. Next row: Cast off 5, K to end (5 sts). Work three rows in stocking stitch, beginning with a purl row. Cast off. Join the fronts to the back at the shoulders. Neckband With the right side facing pick up and knit eight stitches from the right front, 15 stitches across the back and another eight from the left front. This should give you 31 stitches. Row 1: Knit. Row 2: K5, K2tog, K3, K2tog, K7, K2tog, K3, K2tog, K5 (27 sts). Cast off knitwise.
Button Band
With the right side facing, pick up and knit 33 stitches down the left front. Knit four rows and cast off. Buttonhole Band With the right side facing, pick up and knit 33 stitches up the right front. Work the six row dotty pattern as before. Now work 30 rows in stocking stitch. Cast off.

Sew the top of the sleeve into the armhole, joining the sides to the cast off edges on the body as shown. Join the sleeve and side seams and sew on four small buttons.
Headband
This was knitted with the same yarn as the skirt and 3 mm needles. Using the long tail method cast on 40 stitches. Work three rows in stocking stitch, beginning with a knit row. Cast off knitwise. Join the sides and add a few small buttons.

Shoes
Again, these were knitted to match the skirt, using 3 mm needles. Using the long tail method cast on 12 stitches. Row 1: Purl. Row 2: K1, m1, K4, m1, K2, m1, K4, m1, K1 (16 sts). Row 3: Purl. Row 4: K2, (m1, K4) three times, m1, K2 (20 sts). Row 5: Purl. Row 6: K3, m1, K4, m1, K6, m1, K4, m1, K3 (24 sts). Row 7: Purl. Now shape the foot: Row 8: K14, K2tog, K1, turn. Row 9: Sl 1 pwise, P5, P2tog, P1, turn. Row 10: Sl 1 kwise, K6, K2tog, K6. Row 11: P13, P2tog, P6 (20 sts). The heel is shaped with short rows. Knit the specified number of stitches then wrap the following stitch, turn the work and knit back. This wrapping and turning will be abbreviated as w&t in the pattern and is worked like this: on knit rows: sl 1 pwise, yf, turn, sl 1 pwise, yf. on purl rows: sl 1 pwise, yb, turn, sl 1 pwise, yb. Rows 12 & 13: K3, w&t, P3. Rows 14 & 15: K6, w&t, P6. Row 16: Knit. Rows 17 & 18: P3, w&t, K3. Rows 19 & 20: P6, w&t, K6. Cast off knitwise. Join the back and sole seams. Sew shirring elastic just under the cast off edge, using tiny stitches. If you knot the ends of the elastic inside the centre back, the ends will remind you which way to put the shoes on the doll. They should be pulled up at the back and down at the front. That's one doll dressed. The other doll has a flared skirt and a short cardigan; her shoes and underwear are exactly the same as for the first doll.
Flared Skirt

I used about 15g of shade 527 and the skirt is longer than the pleated one, about 13 cm / 5". Using the long tail method cast on 80 stitches. Knit four rows. Work four rows in stocking stitch. Repeat from ? four more times, giving you five garter stitch ridges across the knitting. Next row: \*K2, K2tog, repeat from \* to end (60 sts). Next row: Knit. Work eight more rows in stocking stitch, beginning with a purl row. Knit three rows for the waistband and cast off. Join the back seam and add shirring elastic just below the waist.
