Materials
300 yards of fingering weight yarn, such as Madeline Tosh Sock or String Theory sock. Green sample is knit in String Theory; brown sample is knit in Trekking XXL. Size 3 needles or size needed to achieve gauge, either a set of 4 double-pointed or two circular needles Cable needle if desired 3 stitch markers Waste yarn Yarn needle
Gauge:
28 stitches to 4 inches over reverse stockinette Size: One size, fits most Abbreviations: CO: Cast on K: Knit P: Purl

Right mitt:
Cuff: CO 56 stitches, divided evenly between needles. Join for working in round, being careful not to twist stitches. Begin Cuff cable pattern: Rounds 1-4: \*P1, K2, P2, K4, P2, K2, P2, K2, P2, K4, P2, K2, P1,\* repeat between \* and \* to end. Round 5: \*P1, K2, P2, place next two stitches on cable needle and hold to front, k2, k2 off cable needle. P2, K2, P2, K2, P2. Place next two stitches on cable needle and hold to front, k2, k2 off cable needle. P2, K2, P1.\* Repeat Rounds 1-5 until cuff is desired length to wrist, ending with Round 5. Place marker to note beginning of round; begin Hand pattern.
Hand:
Purl first 28 palm stitches, place marker, then knit first row of Back of Hand chart. Round 2: Begin thumb gusset: Pick up one stitch at beginning of round. Purl in the front and back of the next stitch. Place a 3'd marker. These three stitches begin your thumb gusset. Purl next 27 stitches, then Row 2 of Back of Hand chart. Continue as established, purling palm stitches and working Back of Hand chart. Increase for thumb gusset every 4" round by picking up one stitch at beginning of round and purling in the front and back of last stitch before marker. When there are 15 stitches in your thumb gusset, purl thumb gusset as established to desired length to bottom of thumb. Next row: Place thumb gusset stitches on holder or scrap yarn. CO 3 stitches onto end of previous round. Purl remainder of palm and knit the Back of Hand chart to complete the round. Purl the cast on stitches and move to beginning of new round. Continue purling the palm and cast on stitches and continue following Back of Hand chart to end. If your hands are small, you may want to omit rounds 38-41. Bind off purling all stitches and weave in ends.
Thumb:
Place 15 saved stitches on needles. Purl across and pick up 5 stitches along inside of thumb and at cast on stitches. Next round: purl across, purling two together twice at picked up inside stitches. Continue to purl around until thumb is desired length; bind off purling all stitches and weave in ends.
Left mitt:

Round 2:
Begin thumb gusset: Knit row 2 of Back of Hand chart, move marker, purl next 27 stitches. Place 3rd marker. Pick up one stitch, then purl in the front and back of the next stitch. These three stitches begin your thumb gusset. Continue as established, working Back of Hand chart and purling palm stitches. Increase for thumb gusset every 4" round by picking up one stitch after the 2"d marker and purling in the front and back of last stitch before 3"d marker. When there are 15 stitches in your thumb gusset, purl as established to desired length to bottom of thumb. Next round: Knit the Back of Hand chart, move marker, purl to 2nd marker. Place thumb gusset stitches on holder or scrap yarn. CO 3 stitches onto the end of the needle, replace end of round marker. Continue purling the palm and cast on stitches and continue following Back of Hand chart to end. If your hands are small, you may want to omit rounds 38-41. Bind off purling all stitches and weave in ends.
