GOtHIKa by Ashveen Peerbaye
Gothika is a lace shawl with traditional top-down triangular construction. This shawl was inspired by the motifs of Gothic architecture, and features an intricate overall pattern of interlaced arches, with a Gothic panel border. The design is straightforward enough to make this project suitable for an adventurous beginner in charted lace shawl knitting. Make this shawl yours by choosing yarn weight, needle size and the number of repeats of the arches section.

Pattern notes (please read before casting on)
Gothika begins at the center of the neck and is knit down to the bottom edge. A two-stitch garter border is knit on both sides (RS and wS) of the pattern, along with 4 yarn over increases on each right side (RS). A single center stockinette stitch links the two triangles that form the shawl. All the patterning is done on the right side (RS), with all wrong side (WS) rows being purled between the garter borderstitches. The pattern for this shawl is provided in charted form. Each chart in the "Gothika Charts" section represents one half of the shawl, and must be worked twice in order to create a complete row. The charts do not include the garter borders Gothika shawl pattern Copyright ? 2014 by Ashveen Peerbaye and the center stitch, so make sure you remember to knit them! Moreover, since WS rows are purled, the charts show only Rs (odd) rows. After you've finished casting on and setting up the first 3 rows, the shawl is therefore knitted as follows: Odd rows (Rs): Knit 2 border stitches, work appropriate chart from right to left (for the right side of the shawl), knit center stitch, work the same chart right to left again (left side of the shawl), and knit 2 border stitches. Even rows (ws): Knit 2 border stitches, purl accross to last 2 stitches, knit 2 border stitches.
Instructions
1. Casting on and setting up Begin by casting on 5 stitches, and work the first 3 rows as follows: Row 1: knit all stitches. Row 2: kl, kfb, kl, kfb, kl. There will be 7 stitches on your needle at the end of row 2. Row 3: knit all stitches. 2. Gothic Arches Pattern WorkChart 1once. Work chart 2 as many times as desired to make the shawl the size you wish, or to suit the quantity of yarn you have available. 4 repeats of Chart 2 should yield a shawl that uses less than 400m (440 yards) of fingering weight yarn on 4mm (Us 6) needles. This may vary according to your gauge. Do not hesitate to use a lifeline'! 3. Gothic Border Pattern Work Chart 3 once. Do not purl back at the end of the last odd row (RS). Turn your work and proceed to bind off on the wS row. 4. Binding off and finishing Bind off the shawl loosely (switch to larger needles if you are so inclined) using the Russian bind off’, as follows: p2tog, \*replace stitch from right needle to left needle, and purl this stitch together with the next one\* Repeat between \*s until all the stitches of the shawl have been bound off. Fasten off the last stitch. Weave in ends. Give your shawl a vigorous blocking?. Trim ends. Enjoy your Gothika shawl!
