Endeavour Sock Pattern: Diagonal Circle Motif for Knitting Enthusiasts

Pattern illustration

ENDEAVOUR

by Sockmatician For a while, I've been dreaming up a sock design that incorporates a detail composed of a series of inter-connected circles. I have a bit of a thing for diagonal lines, so I wanted to lay the circles across the foot in a diagonal kind of way. Originally, I tried to achieve the effect with cabling. but I soon realised that this wasn't going to work, so after a few aborted attempts, I settled on using the different textures found in combinations of knits and purls. This pattern includes two different recipes, one for each foot. They are essentiallythe same sock, butwith the circles motif orientated in opposite directions on each, to make a pair of socks that will be symmetrical, rather than identical. This document comes complete with full written instructions for each, as well as charts for the portion of the socks that differs from the left one to

Pattern illustration

the right. If you want to work purely from the written instructions, simply follow the pattern as written out below. If you prefer to work from charts instead, the charted parts of the pattern are written below in bright red. Simply move to the correct row in the (correct) chart, whenever you get to a red portion of the written pattern. This pattern is for a fairly short, ankle-length sock. If you would like to make a longer sock, simply repeat Leg Rounds 2-5, as many times as necessary, in order to reach your desired length, then move onto Round 6.

USEFULINFORMATION

Needles: I used an Addi Turbo, 60cm, lace-point circular needle, 2mm, using magic loop (pattern is written out to assume usage of magic loop). Yarn: This particular knit used Malabrigo Sock Yarn, shown here in Lettuce colourway. I00% merino wool. (There is no nylon content in this yarn, so you might want to reinforce the heel and/or the toe with another, more durable fibre. One skein = 400m (approx. 440yds) Gauge: My gauge with this yarn and these needles is 39 sts and 52 rows = I0cms (4ins). Yardage: Approx350m Notions: 2mm cable needle/dpn, tapestry needle, stitch markers if desired. (Actually, the cables in this pattern can be done without a cable needle, if you prefer) Size: UK size 9 (European size 43, USA size 9.5) Measurements: With my gauge and needles, this pattern knits a sock to fit a foot that is 26.5cm in circumference, 25cm in length. It is I6cm from floor to top of cuff, and snugly fits around a calf that is 26.5cm at the top of the sock.

CUFF (Both Socks)

CO 76 sts

(l use the Twisted German style of long-tail cast-on (also known as Old Norwegian), using both needles side-by-side. This gives the cuff a super stretchy cast-on, and a good strong edge. Information on how to do this can be found by watching this very helpful video from KnittingDaily: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Os_ptcYJxPo) Split your round so that you have 36 sts on the first needle, and 40 sts on the second. (This way, you'll start each needle with K2 - much easier for knitting in front of the telly!)
