Mason Jar Travel Cozy Allyson Dykhuizen
Pattern Intro: My morning routine includes making some coffee in my quart sized IKEA French press, transferring it all to my big quart sized wide mouth mason jar, and taking it with me to drink at work. This worked great in the summer! But as soon as it started getting cold outside my coffee would be cold by the time I got to work. As a knitter I knew a quick knit travel cozy would do the trick, and now I'm drinking piping hot coffee despite my 25 minute walk to the office. I added an A for Allyson to my Cozy using the Serif Uppercase Chart in the book Knitted Letters by Catherine Hirst and Erssie Major. Add your initials, some knit or crocheted flowers, a few buttons, some duplicate stitch embroidery, or just leave it plain. Whatever you do I know your morning beverage will be traveling in style! If Working a Chart: Any stitch pattern chart will work for this pattern as long as it's smaller than 60 sts across and 48 rows tall. Before starting the chart for my 15 sts x 15 rows letter A I knit 5 rnds. If Not Working a Chart: Work in St st until the body of the Cozy measures 8 12". Purled Fold Rnd: P6, YO, K2tog, K1, YO, K2tog, p to end. Work in St st as previously established for another 1". Set aside. Make Twist Tassel Drawstring: Cut a piece of yarn 40" long. Hold one end in your mouth, or have a friend hold it, or tape it to your table or something. Twist the yarn until it twists back on itself, guiding it so that it folds and twists at the center. Tie the ends together to secure. Lay the cord inside of the top of your Cozy and fold the top to the inside of the Cozy around the Twist Tassel Drawstring so you don't need to try to weave it in place after seaming. Seam and BO the Cozy by, \*with your left hand needle, pick up a purl pump from the inside of the Cozy 6-8 rnds down from the Purl Fold Rnd, enough rnds so that the drawstring casing folds smoothly. Knit this purl bump together with the next st on your left hand needle. Repeat from \* once more, then bind off one stitch from your right hand needle. Rep from \* until all stitches have been seamed together and bound off. Cut yarn and secure.
Finishing
Make Tassels: Cut 12 6" strands of yarn. Feed 6 strands between the twists of yarn at both ends of the Twist Tassel Cord. Cut 2 10" strands of yarn. Tie each strand about 1" away from the center folds of each tassel and wrap each side a few times around the tassel. Tie the ends together and trim if necessary. Weave in ends. Slide your Cozy over your mason jar full of coffee and get your day off to a greatstart!
