Basketweave Beanie YaYaLovesToKnit
This hat was made as part of the annual hats for kids project to benefit a local elementary/middle school. Staff, customers, family and friends of a LYS knit so that every child in the school receives a hand made hat. Size: Child size - 16" around band Yarn: Worsted weight yarn - approximately 85 to 90 yds Sample hat was knit using 1-1/2 oz (42 g) of Red Heart Classic Worsted (3.5 oz, 100 g) in Amethyst
Needles:
16" US 06 circular needle 16" US 08 circular needle US 08 dp needles Other tools: stitch marker, darning needle Gauge: 18 stitches x 24 rows = 4" square
Abbreviations used:
k- knit k1fb - knit front and back loop of 1 stitch k2tog - knit two stitches together p -purl

Begin pattern:
1.Using US 06 circular needle, cast on 72 stitches. Place marker and join to begin knitting in the round. 2. [K2, p2] around. Repeat this round until 1-12" from cast-on edge. 3. Change to US 08 circular needle. Knit around once. 4. [K7, k1fb] around - 81 stitches 5. Knit stockinette (knit all stitches) until 2-12 from cast-on edge. 6. [P2, k2] around until last 3 stitches from the end, k3. Repeat this round once more. 7. Knit stockinette for 2 rounds. 8. K1. [P2, k2] around. 9. Repeat step 8. 10. Repeat step 7. 11. [K2, p2] around until last stitch, k1. Repeat this round once more. 12. Repeat step 7. 13. Continue in stockinette until 5" from cast-on edge. (Knit additional rounds if you wish a slouchier hat.) 14. Begin decreases to form the crown of hat. Change to US 08 dp needles when number of stitches decrease to the point that it is not comfortable to knit with the circular needle. · [K7, k2tog] around. - 72 stitches Knit around [K6, k2tog] around - 63 stitches ·Knit around. ·[K5, k2tog] - 54 stitches ·Knit around. ·[K4, k2tog] - 45 stitches ·Knit around. [K3, k2tog] - 36 stitches ·Knit around. ·[K2, k2tog] - 27 stitches [K1, k2tog] - 18 stitches ·K2tog- 9 stitches 15. Cut the yarn leaving at least a 12" yarn end. Using the darning needle, thread the yarn through the remaining 9 stitches; cinch firmly and anchor the yarn. 16. Finishing: Weave in this yarn end as well as the one at the beginning of the hat. Steam or block the hat if desired.
