Colorful Cables: Making Color Changes Using the Ghost Stitch Method
By Cirsium Crochet

Cables are gorgeous in and of themselves, but sometimes you want to do a little more with them. Add some color maybe. Using the ghost stitch to make crocheted cables has an added benefit of making color changes so very easy, and it keeps the back side of the work neat and tidy.

Step 1. Using Color A (Berry), work the double crochet stitch until there are two loops remaining on the hook.

Step 2. Drop Color A to the back of the work, and attach Color B (Cream) by yarning over and completing the double crochet with the new color. Color change complete.

Step 3. Make the number of post stitches required in the pattern. At the last post stitch before a color change, work the post stitch until two loops remain on the hook.

Step 4. Insert the hook in the double crochet behind the post stitch (beginning of ghost stitch)

Step 5. Drop Color B to the back of your work and pick up Color A again

Step 6. Yarn over and draw Color A through the loop. There are now three loops on the hook- two loops in Color B and one of Color A.

Step 7. Yarn over and draw new color through all three loops. Color change and ghost stitch complete.

And back to Color B again----Work the required number of double crochets with Color A. At the last double crochet before a color change, work the double crochet until two loops remain on the hook.

Drop Color A to the back of the work, and yarn over with Color B

and draw Color B through the last two loops of the double crochet. Color change complete. As you work, keep the unused color lying on top of the stitches and crochet over them as you go. Keep the yarn pulled straight, but not taut as you do this. You can choose to cut the yarn at the end of each row, or carry the yarn up the sides of the work--just be careful not to pull too tightly from row to row.

Return rows are worked in the main color.

The wrong side of the fabric looks like this--and the ghost stitch makes sure there are no holes!
