pattern:
before you start: these socks are not very stretchy and the pattern tends to produce a tighter fabric then you may think. therefore: use a sock yarn that is on the thicker side of fingering / light sport weight and use needles one size larger then you normally would (p.ex. US1.5 / 2.5mm instead of U.1 / 2.25mm) cuff: leg loosely cast on 64 sts and join to begin working in the round. work ribbing for 12 rounds as follows: \*[k1, pl, kl, p2, kl, pl, kl] always repeat from start working the leg chart. repeat each chart line 8 times to complete one round on your needles. work rounds 1-14 of pattern chart 4 times, than work 1-7 one more time (cuff plus leg are then about 6 inches /15 cm long). pattern chart:

set-up for heel flap: put next 32 sts on hold (they will be worked later for instep) the heel is worked back and forth over the 32 sts you have still on the needles. Turn your work. heel flap: WS: sl yb, kl, sl yf, [p2, sl yf, kl, sl yf, kl, sl yf, kl] 3 times, p2, sl yf, k2, turn RS: sl yf, p2, [k2, p6] 3 times, k2, p3, turn work theses two rows 18 times all together (36 rows total). turn heel: WS: sl yb, p18, p2tog, pl, turn RS: sl yb, k7, ssk, kl, turn

WS: sl yf, purl to 1 st before gap, p2tog, pl, turn RS: sl yb, knit to 1 st before gap, ssk, kl, turn repeat these last 2 rows until all sts have been worked. Don't turn after last RS row. now 20 heel sts remain. gusset setup: (pattern row9). this is the new beginning of the round. (you have 58 sole sts and 32 instep sts.) gusset decrease: round 1: sole: ssk, knit to 2 sts before instep, k2tog instep: work in instep pattern as established round 2: k across all sole sts, work instep in pattern as established work these 2 rounds 13 times (26 rounds total), decreasing 2 sts every other round. now there are 32 instep sts and 32 sole sts. foot: continue instep as established while always knitting the 32 sole sts end after row 6 of instep when foot is approx 2 inches shorter than desired length. (if foot is not quite long enough when you reach row6 at the instep, then just work some more rounds with instep always in row-6-pattern until foot is long enough.) toe: round 1 (plain round): sole: knit all sts instep: work all sts as they appear (k the knits, p the purls) round 2 (decrease round): sole: [k1, ssk, k to 3 sts before end of sole, k2tog, k1] instep: [k1, ssk, work sts as they appear to 3 sts before end of instep, k2tog, k1], repeat this 2 rounds until you have 32 sts left, then always work round 2 until 16 sts are left. finishing: leaving a tail of at least 8 inches, break yarn and close the toe using Kitchener stitch. weave in the ends. then knit a second sock and enjoy!
about this pattern:
Giulietta is a figure in the opera “Les contes d'Hoffmann" (The Tales of Hoffmann) by Jacques Offenbach. Bribed with a magnificent diamond, Giulietta makes Hoffmann fall in love with her and then steals his reflection from a mirror. In the pattern of these feminine socks, you can see the faceted jewels and the round shape of mirrors.
