Facade Socks

Like many buildings, Facade Socks have a decorative front for the world to see. One portion of the front design is used on the back of the leg, creating a lacy rib pattern. Sized for a woman's medium foot, they are worked cuffdown and have a flap heel with eye of partridge and rib pattern below the back leg pattern. The pattern has both charted and written directions and is written to be needle neutral. The important points - beginning of round, gusset decreases - can be marked with markers or new needles, depending on your preferred sock-knitting method.

Cuff and Upper Leq
Note: The cuff has different patterns on the front and back to complement the leg patterns. Cast on 64 sts. Arrange the sts in multiples of 16 per needle. The first 32 sts will be the front leg and the last 32 will be the back. Join without twisting and mark beginning of round. Work the cuff (Chart A) as follows: Round 1 front 32 sts - work the first 4 sts of the chart to the first repeat (shown in blue), work that repeat 5 times and then work the next 3 sts of the chart. Round 1 back 32 sts - work the second repeat (shown in red) 4 times. Work this round 16 times. Start the leg (Chart B) by working rounds 13-16. The front 32 sts are fully charted; work the 8-stitch repeat 4 times across the back 32 sts.
Leg
Continuing with round 1, work until the leg is almost the desired length, ending after a round 6 or 14. Continue in pattern for 2 rounds on the front sts and make the following changes to the back sts only: Round 7 or 15 back sts: k1, yo, k2, ssk, yo, kl, p2. Work established pattern over the next 16 sts. K1, yo, k2tog, k2, yo, k1, p2 (2 sts increased, 66 total). Round 8 or 16 back sts: k7, p2, (k6, p2) 2 times, k7. Leave the last 2 purl sts unworked; place them and the front 32 sts on hold for the instep.
Heel Flap and Turn
heel (Chart C) is worked in rows over 32 sts. Slip sts as if to purl with yarn to the v Rows 1 (ws): s1, (p6, k2) 3 times, p7 Row 2 (rs): (s1, k1) 3 times, s1, (p2, k1, s1, k1, s1, k1, s1) 3 times, k1 Row 3: s1, (p6, k2) 3 times, p7 Row 4: s1, k1, (k1, s1) 2 times, kl, (p2, s1, kl, s1, kl, s1, k1) 3 times, k1 Work these 4 rows 8 times (32 rows) or until the flap is desired length, ending after a rs row. With the ws facing, turn the heel as follows: Row 1 (ws): sl1, p18, p2tog, p1, turn Row 2 (rs): sl1, k7, ssk, k1, turn Row 3: sl1, p8, p2tog, p1, turn Row 4: sl1, k9, ssk, k1, turn Continue in this manner, purling or knitting 1 more st each row, ending with sl1, k17, ssk, k1 (20 sts).
Gusset and Foot
Note: The first 32 sts of Chart B are used for the instep. Introduce new needles as needed for your method and with RS facing, pick up 1 st in each slipped st along the flap plus 1 more at the corner to close the gap. Continuing from where you finished the leg, p2 and then work the next round (1 or 9) across the instep. Pick up 1 st at the corner and 1 st in each slipped st along the flap. Knit to the instep and mark the beginning of round.
Gusset Decreases
Even round - p2, work the next instep round, knit the sole sts to end of the round. Decrease round - p2, work the next instep round, k1, ssk, knit to 3 sts before the end of the round, k2tog, k1 Alternate these 2 rounds until you have 30 sole sts. Continue working the foot until it is 2%4" shorter than desired ending after round 8 or 16. If needed, work just rounds 15 & 16 until the foot is long enough. Move the first purl st on the instep to the sole; knit it and mark the new beginning of round. While working the first toe round, move the last purl st on the instep to the sole so that there are 32 instep sts and 32 sole sts.
Toe
Even round - knit all sts Decrease round - (k1, ssk, knit to 3 sts before end of instep or sole, k2tog, k1) twice Alternate these 2 rounds until there are 32 sts remaining. Work just the decrease round until there are 16 sts; graft toe together.
