filey
An old fishing town on the northeast coast of England, Filey is mentioned by Gladys Thompson in her book, Patterns for Guernseys, Jerseys Arans. She recalls that her first memory of the town was seeing a knitter in every doorway working with such speed that one could not follow the movement of their needles. The fine workmanship that those women put into the guernseys they knit resulted in durable, long-lasting garments. In some cases the guernseys outlasted their original owner and were handed down from father to son. This sock pattern was inspired by a guernsey that particularly impressed Mrs. Thompson with its longevity. At the time she gathered material for her book, that guernsey had been in constant wear for over forty years, including the WWII years when the guernsey's owner served in the British Navy! The double moss stitch diamonds and cables on this sock are smaller in scale than those of the guernsey, but the overall appearance is in keeping with the Filey guernsey.

pattern notes
- skill level: Intermediate. Knitting in the round, sock knitting, and multiple chart reading experience helpful. - techniques: Learn to cable without a cable needle. - method: Knit from the cuff down with a heel flap, round heel and wedge toe. Instructions are for dpn's. yarn choice: Solid or near-solid yarns are best; dramatically colored yarn will obscure the texture. Finished sizes: Men's M (L). Pattern can be adjusted for a smaller size; see Sizing note below. Leg circumference $\sim8\%$ (9)"/20.5 (22, 23.5)cm, slightly stretched. Foot circumference \~ 9 (9%2)" /22 (23.5, 25)cm, slightly stretched. Yarn: $100g/400$ yds fingering weight (Super Fine #1). Note: Longer feet may require additional yarn. Shown: Froelich-Wolle Special Blauband ( $80\%$ virgin wool, $20\%$ nylon; 210m[225 yds]/50g): color 90 (navy), 2 skeins. Needles: U. size 1 $(2.25\mathsf{m m})$ and Us size 1 1/2 $(2.5\mathsf{m m})$ or sizes needed to obtain the corect gauge. Notions: markers (m; optional), tapestry needle, cable needle (if you use one). Gauge: 30 sts and 43 rounds $\mathsf{\Gamma}=4^{\bullet}$ in stockinette stitch in the round on larger needles. Make sure to check gauge! Sizing: To decrease the width of the sock by 1" remove one stitch from all of the purl columns (8 sts decreased). The ribbing pattern and the heel and foot numbers will need to be modified. Cabling without a cable needle is easy to learn. There are several methods that work; I think this one efficiently transfers the stitches to their new positions. If you prefer another method, that's fine, too! $\circledcirc$ tips: Knit the stitches to be crossed a bit looser on the round previous to the cable crossing to make it easier to maneuver them. Transfer all sts as if to purl. The stitches' position relative to the needle should not change. The right leg of allsts should be facing you after completing the maneuver. The stitch numbers refer to the stitches as they are ordered on the LHN before beginning the cable. Stitch 1 is the one closest to the tip of the LHN, stitch 2 is the second stitch from the tip, the one to the left of stitch 1, etc. C4B (Cable 4 Back): With RHN, reach in front of sts 1 & 2 and insert it into the front of st 3 and then st 4. Pinch the base of the four sts with your thumb and forefinger at the front and back respectively and carefully slide LHN out of stitches 1, 2, 3 & 4. Sts 3 & 4 are now on the RHN and sts 1 & 2 are floating bebind the RHN. With LHN reach bebind sts #3 & 4 and insert the needle from the left into st $\#2$ first, then into st #1. Now pull RHN to the right and use the tip of LHN to transfer sts 4 & 3 from RHN to the LHN in that order, slipping as if to knit. The sts should be lined up on the LHN in the following order starting with the st farthest from the tip (reading them left to right): 2, 1, 4, 3. Check to make sure that the right leg of each st is facing you so that you can knit into the front of them as usual. Knit the sts one at a time and proceed with the pattern. C4F (Cable 4 Front): With RHN reach bebind sts 1 & 2 and insert it into the back of st 3 and then st 4. Pinch the base of sts 1 & 2 with your thumb and forefinger at the front and back respectively and carefully slide LHN out of stitches 1, 2, 3 & 4. Sts 3 & 4 are now on the RHN and sts 1 & 2 are in front of the RHN. With LHN reach in front of sts #3 & 4 and insert the needle the left side ofst $\#2$ first, then into st #1. Now pull RHN over to the right and use the LHN to transfer sts 4 & 3 from RHN to the LHN in that order, slipping as if to knit. The sts should be on the LHN in the following order starting with the st farthest from the tip (reading left to right): 2, 1, 4, 3. Check to make sure that the right leg of each st is facing you so that you can knit them as usual. Knit the sts one at a time and proceed with the pattern.

Instructions
cuff
Using smaller needles and a stretchy cast on (Long Tail or Twisted German/Old Norwegian) cast on 68 (72) sts. Divide sts on needles as follows: 17 (18) sts on each needle (Needles 1, 2, 3 & 4). Being careful not to twist sts, join in round and pm after first st to indicate beg of rnd. Beginning on Needl 1, work Ribbing Chart Size M (Size L) across first 34 (36) sts, rep once to end of rnd 1. Cont in established rib pattern for $2^{1}/{_2}^{>}$ (about 24 rows). On the last row of ribbing, stop after stitch 12 (12) on Needle #4. There should be 5 (5) sts remaining on Needle 4.
Rearrange the sts as follows, slipping all sts as if to purl: slip the last 5 (5) sts on needle 4 to needle 1, pm after first st to mark new beg of rnd. In the same manner, slip the last 5 (6) sts of Needle 1 to Needle 2, the last 5 (5) sts of Needle 2 to Needle 3, and the last 5 (6) sts of Needle 3 to Needle 4 - 17 (17) sts on Needles $1\ \&\ 3$ and 17 (19) sts on Needles 2 & 4. Change to larger Needles.
Set-up round: $\ast\mathrm{{l}}_{\mathrm{{k}}}\mathrm{{9}}$ (9), pm, p2, k4, p2, pm, k 9 (11), pm, p2, k4, p2, rep from \* across. Set-up round 2: work sts as established in set-up row. Round 1: Beg row 1 of charts, \*work Chart A (A) Over 9 (9) sts, work Left Cable Chart over 8 sts, work Chart A (B) over 9 (11) sts, work Right Cable Chart over 8 sts, rep from \* once to end of rnd. Cont in pattern as est until four repeats of Chart A have been worked, ending with row 16 Chart A.
heel flap
Set-up: working onto Needle 4, knit first 4 sts of Needl 1. Turn work so wrong side is facing. $\mathrm{sl}~1$ as if to purl, purl 32 (34) sts onto 1 dpn. Slipping as if to knit, transfer rem 6 (6) sts from Needle 3 to Needle 2. Divide the 35 (37) sts on Needles 1 & 2 for instep (or place them on a holder); they will be worked later. The heel is worked back and forth in rows over the 33 (35) sts that are now on 1 dpn. Sl sts should be slipped purlwise.

Row $|\colon{^{\ast}\mathrm{Sl}}\ 1,{\mathrm{k}}1$ , rep from \* across, end $\textrm{k}1$ Row 2: Sl 1, purl to end. Repeat these two rows $*~15$ times for a total of 18 (19) repeats - 18 (19) chain sts at each side of heel flap. Heel flap should meas $2~\,^{1/}\!\,^{\phantom{1}}2$ $(2\ \sqrt[3]{4})^{>}$ . Work fewer or more repeats as needed.
heel turn
Row 1: (RS) S1 1, k18 (19), ssk, k1, turn. Row 2: (WS) S1 1, purl 6 (7), p2 tog, p1, turn. Row 3: (RS) Sl 1, k to one st before gap created by turn on previous row, ssk to close gap, k1, turn. Row 4: (WS) Sl1, purl to one st before gap created by turn on previous row, p2tog to close gap, p1, turn. Repeat rows 3 & 4 until all sts have been worked. There are 19 (21) hee sts.
gusset
S1 1, k 8, pm to indicate new beg of rnd, k10. With Needle 1, pick up and knit one st in each slipped st along edge of heel flap - 18 (19) sts (adjust if fewer or more heel flap rows were knit), pick up and knit tbl 1 st between base of heel flap and instep sts; work across 35 (37) instep sts on Needles 2 and 3 as follows: work row 1 of Chart C over 5 sts, cont patt as est over next 25 (27) sts, work row 1 Chart D over 5 sts; with Needle 4, pick up and knit 1 st between instep and base of heel flap, and 1 st in each slipped st along second edge of heel flap - 18 (19) sts (adjust if fewer or more heel flap rows were knit, k the first 9 sts from the heel needle. Sl rem 10 heel sts onto Needle 1 - 92 (98) sts.

shape gussets
Round 1: Needle 1: knit to last 2 sts, $\textrm{k}\,2$ tog Needles 2 and 3: cont instep sts in pattern following Top of Foot Chart as established; Needle 4: ssk, knit to end - 88 (94) sts rem. Repeat Rounds 1 and 2, dec two sts eor until 68 (72) sts rem - 33 (35) sole sts on Needles 1 and 4, and 35 (37) pattern sts on Needles 2 and 3.
foot
Cont in pattern as established, working four repeats of Chart A. Cont, repeating row 16 of Charts A, C & D (knit these sts) and at the same time working Right and Left Cable Charts until next row is row 3. On the next round, work as est, except when knitting cables. At the Left Cable, instead of knitting the first two cable sts (the two back sts) one at a time, k2tog; at the Right Cable k2 tog the last two cable sts (the two back sts) instead of one at a time; finish rnd as est - 66 (70) sts rem. Cont, knitting all sts in stockinette st until foot length neasures $2^{\circ}$ less than desired length. Remove marker indicating beg of round.
toe
Round 1: Needle 1: knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1; Needle $2;\,\mathrm{k}1$ , ssk, knit to end; Needle 3: as Needle 1; Needle 4: as Needle 2 - 4 sts dec.
Round 2: knit.
Rep these two rnds until 18 sts rem. Knit rem 4 sole sts onto Needle 4 and slip sts from Needle 2 onto Needle 3 - 9 sts on each of two needles.
finish
Break yarn, leaving a 12" (30cm) tail. Thread tail on a tapestry eedle and use Kitchener st to graft ststog. Weave in loose ends. Block on sock blockers or under a damp towel.
