Heel Flap

Knit across the stitches on needle 1 (14 stitches) and turn. Then slip 1 and purl back 28 (32?, 36?) stitches. These 29 (33, 37) stitches will form the heel flap. The remaining 27 stitches maybe transferred to waste yarn, if desired. Row 1: \*sl 1, kl; repeat from \* to last stitch, k1 Row 2: \*sl 1, p to end of row Repeat these two rows until the heel flap measures 2/2 inches or desired length. End with a purl row (Row 2).

Turn Heel:

Round 1: Sl 1, k16 (18, 20), ssk, k1, turn Round 2: Sl 1, p6, p2tog, p1, turn Round 3: Sl 1, k7, ssk, k1, turn Round 4: Sl 1, p8, p2tog, p1, turn Round 5: Sl 1, k9, ssk, k1, turn Round 6: Sl 1, p10, p2tog, p1, turn Continue in this manner, working one more stitch each time until all the stitches have been worked. 17 (19,21) heel stitches remain.

Pick up Gusset stitches:

Needle 1: Knit across the heel stitches, placing a marker at the center of the heel to mark eor. Pick up one stitch in each slip stitch at the edge of the heel flap. If desired, pick up an extra stitch in the corner formed by the instep stitches and the first slip stitch at the top of the heel flap. (This helps prevent a hole from forming.) Needles 2 and 3: continue across instep in pattern stitch, Needle 4: Pick up the same number of stitches along other side of heel flap, making a stitch in the corner formed by the instep and heel flap (if desired). Continue knitting to center of heel. Knit around, continuing in pattern stitch on needles 2 and 3. This twists the stitches, making them tighter, closing any holes, and gives the heel flap a pretty edge.

Gusset Decreases:

Round 1: Knit to last three stitches on needle 1, k2tog, k1. Continue in pattern stitch on needles 2 and 3. On needle 4, k1, ssk, then knit to eor. Round 2: Knit even, continuing in pattern stitch on needles 2 and 3. Repeat rounds 1 and 2, decreasing every other row, until 54 (62, 70) stitches remain. Continue knitting even following pattern stitch on instep until foot length is 2 inches shorter than desired and ending with a knit round on needles 2 and 3.

Toe Decreases:

Decrease Round: Needle 1: Knit to last 3 stitches, k2tog, k1 Needle 2: k1, ssk, knit remaining stitches on needle Needle 3: Knit to last 3 stitches, k2tog, k1 Needle 4: k1, ssk, knit remaining stitches on needle Knit one decrease row. Then knit 1 rounds even. Repeat these 2 rounds until there are 18 stitches remaining. Knit across stitches on needle 1 with needle 4. Transfer stitches from needle 3 to needle 2. Graft toe closed using Kitchener stitch.
