Pattern Notes
The top is started from the garter stitch chest band. The straps are attached directly and joined to the chest band in the back. From the lower edge of the chest band the main body is knitted top-down in feather-and-fan lace pattern. A garter stitch edge rounds off the piece nicely. Feather-and-fan pattern: Stich number is a multiple of 18. Rd. 1: \* (k2tog) x 3, (yo, k1) x 6, (k2tog) $\textsf{x3}^{\star}$ , repeat from \* to \* throughout Rd. 2.: purl Rd. 3 and 4: knit Repeat these 4 rounds over and over
Instructions
Chest band: Use the multi-color yarn as contrast yarn and chain crochet approx. 120 stitches. Cut yarn. With the knitting needle and the solid color yarn pick up 112 stitches from the chain and join to knit in the round, being careful not to twist. The round begins and ends at the center of the back. Work in garter stitch for 10 rounds, beginning with a knit round and ending with a purl round. Cast-off round: Cast off 10 sts knitwise, knit 8 sts and slip them onto a stitch holder $\stackrel{\cdot}{=}$ left strap back), cast off 22 sts knitwise, knit 8 sts and slip them onto a stitch holder ( $\equiv$ left strap front), cast off 20 sts knitwise, knit 8 sts and leave them on the needle $\mathbf{\dot{\bar{\rho}}}=\mathbf{\bar{\rho}}$ right strap front), cast off 22 sts knitwise, knit 8 sts and slip them onto a stitch holder ( $\equiv$ right strap back), cast off 10 sts knitwise. Cut yarn. Straps: Reattach the thread at the front end of the right strap with the wrong side facing. Continue to work in garter stitch over the 8 strap stitches for approx. 24 cm (9 1/2 inches) or as long as you like it. Put the 8 stitches from the back end of the right strap back onto a knitting needle and join them with the live stitches in Kitchener stitch. Work the left strap in the same wav. Body: Resolve the chain cast-on carefully and slip the 116 stitches back on the circular needle. Continue to work with the multi-color yarn now. Rd. 2: knit, decreasing 4 sts distributed evenly: (k27, k2tog) x 4. 112 stitches remaining Rd. 3: knit, place a stitch marker after every 16 stitches. You will have 7 pattern repeats. Rd. 4: \* (k2tog) x 2, k1, (yo, k1) x 6, k1, (k2tog) x 2\*. Repeat from \* to \* around. Yielding 126 stitches $=7\times18$ stitches. Begin working in the feather-and-fan pattern, starting with the second round. Continue for 22 pattern repeats or until the piece reaches the desired length. Bottom edge: Switch to the solid yarn and work 6 rounds in garter stitch, beginning with a knit round and ending with a purl round. Cast off loosely knitwise. Finishing: Virtually none ;-). Weave in ends. Block lightly if you like.
