SPATZ
by Zoe Bogner Every shoe is different, and thusly this pattern was designed to be very adaptable and forgiving. You may find you need to add or subtract rows for a perfect fit.
Equipment
· 100g 8ply DK wool (here I've used Jo Sharp Classic 100% pure wool, but anything you can get the gauge with will work) ·4 x 4mm dpns (US 6, UK 8)

· Pair 4mm straight needles (or 4mm circulars, so you can try it on as you go) (If you're skilled in the art of Magic Loop, the dpns and straight needles can be substituted for a suitable circular) ·6 buttons
Gauge
22.5 sts and 30 rows over 10cm (4 inches) using 4mm needles.
Button Hole
A little fiddly, but lucky for us, KnittingHelp has a great video tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EY4BzLo-Xs The gist of it is.. · Bring yarn to front, slip 1 purl-wise, bring wool to back. · Cast off 3 sts, but instead of knitting into them, just slip them onto your right needle purl-wise before bringing the second stitch over the top to complete the cast off stitch. · Pass the last worked stitch on your right needle onto your left needle, turn work. · Bring yarn to back, using Cable Cast On, cast on 4 sts. (Cable Cast On: Instead of inserting the needle through the stitch, place it between the first and second stitches, then proceed as normal). · Turn work, send yarn to back. · Slip 1, pass the last CO stitch over the slipped stitch - done!
Pattern
ns, distributing across needles, 16 sts each. Join, being careful not to twist wo. Round 1 to 20: Work in 2x2 rib (knit 2, purl 2) Round 21: Cast off 16 sts, work in 2x2 rib to the end of the row. Transfer to straight or circular needles (when you do this is up to you. Some people will feel comfortable doing this at the start of this row, at the start of the next row, or between the two. It's just for comfort, and doesn't impact on the work). Rows 22 to 24: Work in 2x2 rib Row25: Cast on 24 sts, work the rest of the row in 2x2 rib Rows 26 to 34: Work in 2x2 rib Row 35: Work 4 sts in rib, make button hole. Work rows 26 to 35 twice more, or until you have the desired number of rows and button holes. Work 7 rows in 2x2 rib, cast off loosely. Attach buttons, and you're done!
