Ringy a recipe for infinity scarves by Jane Tanner (Knit Jane Knit) ? 2011

I have fallen in love with the simplicity of infinity cowls (a.k.a. circular scarves). There are tons of patterns out there, but I wanted to come up with a basic recipe that used only one skein of a worsted weight yarn. So, here's the basic plan and I've included some examples. Materials: 200-230 yards worsted weight yarn, US needles 8 (5 mm) & 9 (5.5 mm), stitch marker. See examples below for different yarn/needle combinations. uge: approximately 4 stitches/1”' (you need a bit of drape in your knit fabric) Sizes/circumference: Snug/38-40" (Regular/42-46", Looser/48-50"). The height of the scarf will be determined by the size you knit. The Snug size will be tallest, Looser will be narrowest, and Regular will be in the middle. The scarf is intended to be worn doubled. The Basic How To: Using larger needle, cast on 160 (180, 200) stitches. Place a stitch marker and join in the round, making sure not to twist. Changing to the smaller needle, work in desired pattern (see below for ideas). When you have about 25-30 yards left, work your last pattern row and bind off loosely. I like to do a stretchy bind off: knit 1, \*knit 1, slip two stitches back to the left needle and knit two stitches together through the back loops,\* repeat until you have only one stitch left on your right needle. Cut yarn, leaving a 6" tail and pull through the last stitch. Weave in all yarn ends.
Here are some examples:
1. Using worsted weight yarn and size 9 needles, cast on 180 stitches. Change to size 8 needles and work the following pattern: Round 1: (Knit 5, purl 5) repeating around. Round 2: Knit around. Repeat rounds 1 and 2 until you have 25-30 yards left, then repeat round 1. Bind off loosely. 2. Using aran weight yarn (200 yards, gauge 3 stitches/1'") and size 10.5 needles, cast on 144 stitches. Change to size 10 needles and work the following pattern: Rounds 1 & 2: (K2, p2) repeating around. Rounds 3 & 4: (P2, k2) repeating around. Repeat rounds 1-4, ending on either round 2 or 4. Bind off loosely. 3. Using fingering weight yarn (385 yards, gauge 4.5 stitches/1") and size 7 needles, cast on 210. Change to size 6 needles and work the following pattern: Round 1: (K1, p1) repeating around. Round 2: Knit around. Round 3: (P1, k1) repeating around. Round 4: Knit around. Repeat rounds 1-4, ending on either round 1 or 3. Bind off loosely. @ 2011 Jane Tanner (Knit Jane Knit) Not for commercial use in any way.
