Concentric Rings Shawlette Capelet Knitting Pattern with Detailed Instructions and Yarn Suggestions

Concentric Rings

A top-down, split-circle shawlette/capelet with concentric rings in contrast colors. Can easily be made longer if desired (see notes in italics). Finished length of prototype is 20". Knit in stockinette except for the increase rows and edging. Notions: Needle size 6, long circular; stitch markers, row counter. Yarn: Color A (dark): 300 yards sportweight yarn Color B (light): 400 yards sportweight yarn Choose a yarn which results in good drape on your chosen needles. The prototype was knit with (A) Arctic Qiviut's 100% qiviut (sportweight) and (B) Jade Sapphire's 2-Ply Silk/Cashmere knit together with Arctic Qiviut's Arctic Beauty, both of which are laceweight. The shawl was designed to maximize use of just one ball of each yarn. 4o0 yards of a sportweight yarn can be substituted for the laceweight held double.

The capelet has an i-cord threaded through the neckline eyelets and tied in a bow, providing a secure closure and a romantic look.

Shawl

With A, cast on 148 stitches. Setup row (Ws): k2 edge stitches, place marker, k 144 stitches, place marker, k2 edge stitches. On all subsequent rows the two edge stitches on each side are always knit. Rows 1-4: knit. Row 5 (decrease row): k2 edge stitches, slip marker, \*k2, k2tog, repeat to marker, sm, k2 edge stitches (108 stitches between markers). Row 6: k2 edge stitches, sm, purl to marker, sm, k2 edge stitches. Row 7: with B, knit. Row 8: with B, k2 edge stitches, slip marker, purl to marker, slip marker, k2 edge stitches. Row 9: with B, k2 edge stitches, sm, \*k2tog, yo, repeat to marker, sm, k2 edge stitches. Row10:asrow8.

Main Stripe

Rows 11-24: with A, work center stitches in stockinette (knit on the odd-numbered RS rows, purl on the evennumbered ws rows), maintaining edge stitches in garter. Eyelet Stripe (with increases) Row 25: with B, as row 7. Row 26: with B, as row 8. Row 27: with B, k2 edge stitches, sm, \*k1, yo, repeat to marker, sm, k2 edge stitches. There are now 216 stitches in the main section. Row 28: with B, as row 8. Repeat Main Stripe (with A) for rows 29-42. Repeat Eyelet Stripe (without increases, with Yarn B) for rows 43-46. Repeat Main Stripe (with A) for rows 47-60. Repeat Eyelet Stripe (without increases, with Yarn B) for rows 61-64. Repeat Main Stripe for rows 65-78 (with A). Repeat Eyelet Stripe (with increases, with Yarn B) for rows 79-82. There are now 432 stitches in the main section. To lengthen by making more rings at the top, simply repeat Main Stripe followed by Eyelet Stripe (without increases) for the number of extra rings. No further Eyelet Stripes with increases are required beforebeginning the lower section.

Shaping now changes to wedges; this section is all worked with Yarn B. Four more stitch markers will be needed. Row 83 (setup row): k2 edge stitches, slip marker, k54, place marker, k108, pm, k108, pm, k108, pm, k54, sm, k2 edge stitches. (Three wedges flanked by two half-wide wedges.) Row 84 and all subsequent WS rows: k2 edge stitches, sm, purl to last marker, sm, k2 edge stitches. Row 85 ("lncrease Row"): k2 edge stitches, sm, k to 1 stitch before next marker, yo, k1, sm (first half-wedge increases complete), \*k1, yo, k to 1 stitch before next marker, yo, k1, sm (second wedge increases complete). Repeat this sequence from \* for the third and fourth wedges. For the final half-wedge, after you have slipped the preceding marker, k1, yo, knit to edge marker, sm, k2 edge stitches. Row 87: knit across. Repeat the increase row (as row 85) on every 4th row afterwards (rows 89, 93, 97, 101, 105). Row 107: with A, knit across all stitches. Row 108: with A, knit across all stitches. Row 109: with B, repeat the increase row (as row 85). Row 110: with B, as row 84. Repeat these four rows once more, then repeat rows 107 and 108. With A, bind off all stitches loosely purlwise on the Rs. Weave in ends and block. I-cord drawstring: cast on three stitches with A and knit an i-cord of about 36" long. Starting at one edge of the top row of eyelets, weave it in and out of every eyelet. Center it in the eyelets and fasten. Purchased ribbon is also an option. Wear and enjoy. Notes: When the prototype was finished (including the i-cord) I had four inches of A and about ten yards each of the two yarns used for B, remaining. If you are the kind of knitter who worries about running out of yarn, I highly recommend buying some extra. Alternately, you can end the big B section (rows 81-104) sooner, just make sure to begin your color A garter stripes with a Rs row that is not an increase row. To lengthen at the bottom, simply continue with the big B section until the desired length is reached (maintaining the increases every 4th row), and then end with the instructions for rows 107-117. Following is a row-by-row table of the stitch patterns. Rows done with color B are highlighted in light green. Note! Edge stitches are not shown in the table except on pattern change rows, and "Total Sts" does not include the edge stitches in the count.
